I have the 300 F4 IS L lens. Can anyone who has used this lens and the newer 70-300 L lens comment on auto-focus speed, especially at 300mm. Is there a difference in sharpness of the two lenses at 300mm? Thanks

I have used both and I can comfortably tell you that the 70-300 L focuses faster than the 300/4 L. Of the copies I have my 70-300 L is just a tad sharper than the 300 L.
Finally the IS on the 70-300 L has 2 stops more that the one on the 300/4 L.
The 300/4 L was my favorite lens until I got the 70-300 L.

As mentioned above, the zoom is faster, has the newer IS as well. Lots of folks love the new lens.

I'm not a fan of the focus/zoom ring switch-up, the lens's girth; it's kind of plump, the inability to use a Canon brand T/C, and mostly because of the variable aperture; I'm a big fan of Canon's constant aperture glass, f4L zooms in particular; I've the 17-40 and 70-200 IS in my kit with a mid-range to follow soon.

If you don't have a 70-200, need the extra 100mm reach, the 70-300L looks like the best option.

I was thinking if it was worth selling the 300 and get the 70-300, or I might just wait and see what the new 100-400 goes for when it is released and what the weight is. I also have the 70-200 L F4 IS lens which I really like and probably would not sell.

It sounds odd but I've both the 70-200 and 300, don't carry the 300 much, so I carry the 1.4x T/C II or III and I've not seen a huge IQ hit, the 70-200 w/1.4x makes a good combo; AF speed does take a big hit; by half. T/Cs work in a pinch when you want to keep weight down a bit

I'm waiting on a 400 also, hoping for a 400 f5.6L IS or the phantom 100-400 Mk II

I have both the 300 f4L IS and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS.

I can name some ideas you may not have thought about. A 300mm with f4 aperture (or larger, f2.8), is very good to have in rain forests or other low light conditions.

If you own, or might own, a Canon 5DIII or 1DX in the future, using an f5.6 lens gives you the choice of one (the central) cross sensor. With a f4 lens, you have the choice of 41 cross sensors. This is really important for wildlife photographers.

Don, good points about the 5D3's and 1Dx's AF, center point at f8 is a big bonus as well

It might be interesting to have a standard procedure for measuring AF speed. Testing lenses at different apertures and focal lengths is also going to provide less than useful data.

How fast does the 70-300mmL AF at 300mm and F/4??

I do own the 5D Mark III and was just shooting warblers using the center point only because the birds are so small and jump around a lot. I also have a 70D. Need to do some more testing. The good thing about the 300 compared to the 400 is that the min. focusing distance is less. Sometimes these birds were only 6 feet away.
