Still working through some images from late February taken during a weekend trip to the Tampa Bay area. A couple small islands at the mouth of the Manatee river are big bird rookeries; it's surprisingly urban, and the wood storks make trips back and forth to the WalMart parking lot looking for nesting material. All shot from a kayak; the challenge is to avoid getting condos or Costcos in the background.

Comments/criticisms/advice all appreciated, and thanks for stopping by.

Greg

Edits: warmed up those woodies (no jokes please) and the LG as suggested by TK.

Fantastic storks - the last exceptional. I wonder if you're familiar with the work of M. Philip Kahl, sadly passed now but he wrote the book on storks, a few actually and was a brilliant photographer as well working for years for Geographic. You may enjoy his work - or looking at the quality of your work quite familiar already! Cheers

A really good set Greg. The texture in the storks is super. I don't know that stork porn will catch on though.

For some reason we don't see many of these guys here These are very good Greg and they don't look like easy birds to expose properly. The first one just plain rocks, if you came back from a foreign land with that we would all be going nuts over it. Love the textures and feathers in that one as well as the character. If I was to crit these I would offer that a white balance adjustment on some of them would make them more pleasing the eye so I'll keep my comments to that.
1,2 and 7 I would leave as is
3 and especially 4 & 5 could use a bit of warming just to add a touch of warmer whites
6 does have a blue cast, this one could handle the most warming
8,9 a touch warmer wouldn't hurt
Also for the heavier overcast shots a touch of warming helps to relieve dullness while not ruining the wonderful tonal range the overcast offers

I really do like the set Greg, wonderful work

Tim

Thanks, Morris! It's an interesting location and I think broadly representative of many great wildlife opportunities in Florida where the birds are relatively habituated and very approachable.

Thanks so much for that thoughtful comment and information, Phil. I was not familiar with Philip Kahl's work but I am now...seems like he was an amazing guy with interests and accomplishments that lie at the intersection of wildlife biology, photography, and conservation. I will try and get hold of his stork/heron/ibis magnum opus.

Thanks, Herb! I also have a few of the same bird in profile but the portrait looks more, er, intimate (assuming one can use that work when referring to wood storks).
