I was just wondering how these two compared, especially If I could use a 1.4X with the 300.
Love to have the 300 2.8, but price wise its way out in left field.
Looking for best handholdable for BIF with a 1D series camera, hopefully a 1DMKIV If and when I can find one.
Trying to improve mysetup over my 1DMKII and 100-400 for BIF. 100-400 is great for static birds, but it seems a bit slow in BIF shots.

+1 - good thread.

400 f5.6 without a doubt. Every 100mm and every stop counts.

I recently considered both as well. I went for the 400/5.6 because I already have a 300 f/4 for my Nikon setup AND (more importantly) I found a good deal on a new 400/5.6. If I would have found a good deal on a 300/4 first I may have gone that route. Plus AF will be faster and IQ (wide open) should be better without using a TC, so it's another plus for the 400.

Thanks Jim I did see that thread, hey your starting to be on everything I post!
Its just I saw afew shots from a friend and his 5DIII and 300 2.8, and he was using a 1.4 and the shots were really good.
Yes it appears If you almost need two lenses for birding, at least budget birding. The 100-400 for static birds, and the old trusty 400 5.6 for BIF.
I'd almost sell the 100-400, buy a 400 5.6 and a 70-300 L, but that 100-400 is hard to part with..
Even If I sold my S10 pickup I couldn't afford a 500, then again I really want to stay handheld.

300 f2.8 & 1.4x TC versus 300 f4 & 1.4x TC is hardly the same thing.

Without a doubt the 400 5.6 is far superior to the 300 f4/1.4 combo for IF shooting. I have had both, still have the 400, and shot both combos with the mk4. The 300/1.4 combo will slow down the burst rate and is a lot slower to focus. If you ONLY considering IFs, go with the 400 5.6

Full times score:

400L 1: 300L 0

The 400L is actually in the same league as the superteles for AF speed. It's ultrasimple design means there's very little glass to move and the AF is just vastly more responsive for BIF.

300L is a much more versatile, but for birding it's too short in general and you don't want to be using it with a 1.4x TC for BIF, trust me.
