Well, I rarely use DPP and never use elements so take this with a grain of salt, but I have lightroom configured to use TIFF files when sending to Photoshop for detail work. TIFF files are uncompressed so you shouldn't worry about sending them back and forth as TIFFs. I'm not sure if you can use your elements raw features on a tiff file though.
And to answer your other question, the reason I rarely use DPP is that lightroom is a non-destructive editor that has just about every feature I can think of for adjusting distortion, noise, sharpness, color etc. There are also camera and lens-specific profiles that you can apply. You can always try a LR demo, I think they give you a month.
