Some years ago I sold my 7D and after a few upgrades became a FF-user (5D Mark III/1D x). For birding- BIF and more or less static situations- I usually take my Canon 300 F/2.8 II with the 2x VIII. To give me even more reach, would the Canon 7D be a viable option in good lighting situations using ISO-values in the 100-640 range? If possible please post some examples of pictures taken with the 7D / (300 F/2.8 vII + 2x III) combination. Thanks in advance

I used the old 300/2.8IS, 2xII, and 7D a couple years ago for a few years. I switched over the the 400 DO and 500/4IS V1, but I am seriously starting to think about going back.

That combo was super sharp, even with the old 2XII, so I can only assume that the 300II and 2XIII would be better. These were mostly at ISO800 and ISO1600.

Thanks, those look good especially considering the fact that ISO 800/1600 were used …. That 7D/300/2x combo makes a very nice set-up for the birder who wants to be mobile, I guess!

I would like to use a cropper this spring and summer. As I think the chance of owning a 7D2 in a few months time is very small, I will be looking at buying a (secondhand) 7D first.

I’m in a similar quandary and considering EF lenses on the E-M5 thru a cheap Vello adapter with constant f2.8 and MF enhanced by Oly IBIS. On the M1 the zebra would further aid MF. The BIF would be difficult, but for static shots the combination is a weight reduction and 2x reach, while EF1.4 and 2X offers additional flexibility.
I asked about the 7D vs. M-5/1 noise comparison in another thread. So far, it looks like nobody has the answer based on real side by side comparison.
I remember an awful 7D noise when I tried the camera when it came out. It is possible that a replacement may be soon announced for this relic.

I did the exact same thing - moved to full frame (5D3). My long lens is the 300mm 2.8 IS II and I use the 2xIII extender. I picked up a 7D three weeks ago for the same reasons you stated.

I found that I can get more detail on a small bird with this set up rather than cropping further into the 5D3 file. But I only use this set up when the conditions are basically perfect - In those situations I can keep my shutter speed around 1250 with ISO 640 (I've found this to be a sweet spot for the camera) shooting at f/7.1 or f/8 (the sweet spot for this lens with the 2x converter).

Be aware that this combo autofocuses FAR slower on a 7D vs a 5D3. It's twice as fast on one of the newer cameras.

Here's some samples. The first 3 were shot at ISO 640, the last at ISO 800. Minimal post processing for all files.

I am looking forward to getting a 2x III to use with my 300 II... I currently have an offer at greentoe for one at $425 (and minus the $-50 MIR going on). Waiting to see if they accept it or not! Used a 2x III before with my 135L and 70-200 II and results were quite good. I was happy with it overall. I can only imagine even better performance on the 300.

I also am looking to add a 7D or something one day as a backup, for more reach. Waiting to see what the 7D2 looks like, perhaps...

Me too, and restlessly eager for it to come out.
