I'd give the slight edge to the 24-70L for IQ, but the other slight edge goes to the 24-105L IS for versatility.

You should be happy with either. You are the only one who can decide if f/2.8 and IQ edge is more important than lighter weight, smaller size, 71-105mm, and IS.

That's a really good question. What are you shooting with? What types of photos are you taking? These are important considerations.
I have both lenses. IS is helpful on the 24-105, but the f4 is a slight limitation. From the 5D2 or 7D to later models, the ISO can be adjusted to compensate.

Even so, the 24-70 f2.8 has a wider range of events for me. Shooting events or landscapes, the 24-70 has a nicer color and better bokeh. It's more able to get the "dreamy" picture. I have shot conferences and events with the 24-70 (until recently it was my "go-to" lens for everything) and the only problem I have had is blurry shots because of movement. IS does count for something. I have owned my 24-70 for over 7 years, and it has made 4 cameras shine.

If you want image quality, it's the 70. If you are shooting conferences or events and want a slightly higher percentage of keepers, it's likely gonna be the 105. As noted, the 105 is an "L" lens, and offers high quality imaging. If you are shooting sports at night, well... you're probably going to want a 2.8L, but in a 70-200. IS will help with photographer motion, but will not freeze athletes' motion.

There is likely going to be a considerable difference in price, for a reason. A sharp 70 makes great images, beautiful depth of color, incredible sharpness.

24-70. It is just sharper IMHO. great lens. Love mine. My goto lens for any walking around town, take to a holiday party and one off portraits.

In Africa, my 24-70 was mounted at least 50% of the time on my second body.

My buddy debated the same question, ended up buying the 24-70 and was very happy he didn't buy the 24-105.

If you own the 70-200mm 2.8, it's an easy decision IMHO.

Both are excellent, and neither is perfect. Given that both can produce sharp photographs, I think that the functional differences between the lenses are far more likely to make the difference in your decision. If you need IS or 105mm, no amount of different sharpness is going to worth much.

I'm with Dan here....both are sharp but taking one over the other depends upon what I am shooting, not which one gives me better IQ. Questions that determine which lens I pack are---do I need more reach than 70, low light, IS, carrying weight an issue.

I am happy with both lenses

I had both. At comparable apertures and focal lengths it is hard to tell the difference in sharpness. The 24-70L I had a more pleasing rendering for human skin IME. Bokeh is more pleasing too (even at f/4). The 24-105L has more barrel distortion at the wide end, which cleans up nicely in LR. It is the age old choice between needing f/2.8 or IS/105mm. If you don't need 2.8, the 24-105 is more versatile IMHO

I bought and sold the 24-105 three times because on paper it should be the perfect lens but never quite delivered. I kept my 24-70.

I have tried three 24-105L's too, none of them have been anywhere near as good as my 24-70L, just a more useful range and with reasonable IS

+1

Barring IS, I think it is somewhat of an IQ question...
.
Does 35mm really give you all that much more in reach? I am not sure as I only use the 24-70 and rarely ever found that I wished I had just a little more reach from my 24-70. But I do know that I can just take a few steps forward and get to a 105 equivalent with my 70mm. It's not as if you have to move 20ft to get to 105mm from 70mm….Zoom with your feet.

And does the IS really help that much when you have a f2.8, particularly if you are using a newer camera with excellent ISO performance. I personally find IS more important in the longer telephoto zoom lenses.

Just a couple of thoughts…

Being able to walk forward a bit or choose a focal length that is longer, which would perhaps suit a portrait more are two different things.

My 24-70L is (comfortably) better for sheer IQ but when I've had to press my 24-105L into service as a portrait lens it's performed well, not least because 100-105mm is a better length but also because you don't necessarily need the absolutely sharpest lens for portraits.

I find my 24-105L ubiquitous. It's useful yes, but its' not particularly good optically and it needs plenty of RAW lens profiling (especially at the wide end) but yet I still use it quite often.

It's the Canon jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none lens

I had both I sold the 24-70 2.8 v1 because I found out the 24-105IS more versatile due to the longer reach and IS. Both are very good lenses the 24-70 might have been a tad sharper. The 24-105 is a bit "darker" given any aperture for some reason. About 1/3 stop or so.

After all this discussion between the two lenses, I got interested to take them both out today to do some comparing. After reviewing the results, it is very hard to say which is the best, but it did seem to confirm my version of the 24-70/2.8L as slightly, slightly better, with much nicer (softer) bokeh.

A side result is I got some entertaining comparisons (below) and a few nice garden scenes I posted in 2014 Canon Spring thread. A good time had by all on a pleasant California morning. (Each set is composted of both lenses at the widest and longest settings, wide open aperture. The lens data on each shot only applies to one of the four shots in the composite.)

All shots at minimum focusing distance for each lens and focal length. 24-70 focused closer at both settings.
