have a question been on my mind for awhile and figure it's time to ask on this forum..I see more and more portraits where the preferred composition is to 'scalp' the subjects intentionally...interested in thoughts/explanations etc. I haven't done enough portrait work to know the reasons..

generally if you include the top of the head you need some space above it too and the subject looks to be about 8-10 feet away. By "scalping" them the subject appears much closer, as though you could touch them. It's just a trick to make the subject appear closer to you and therefore (if there is eye contact) it makes the picture more striking or intimate.

thanks for the explanation...when I first starting recognizing this I thought people were just really lousy at composition
