Went out looking and only found the RWBB's . Plenty of the ladies around and not too many of the guys.

Your nits, crits and suggestions are welcomed and help.

Thank you for looking and I hope you enjoy.

Hello there Ms B...........
Sharpness and content of #1 is super. Looks like WB is a bit cool to green to me here?
#2 lovely
#3 doesn't feel balanced to me and blacks seem a bit too pushed IMO. WB may be a bit cool?

I really like all that is in #1 and #2..........fine comps and content Birdie for me

Nice RWBB's Birdie, the male seems to be different from the ones we have here,
the shoulders are red & white and ours are red & yellow.

I just looked it up you have Tri-colored Blackbirds in these shots

Exceptional composition, color and detail Birdie. Keep up the good work.

I suspect the Blackbirds pictured are Red-winged Blackbirds for the reasons below:

Petersonís Field Guide notes that some Red-winged Blackbirds have whitish margins. Since the Blackbird pictures were taken in SE Louisiana and since Tricolored Blackbirds are an extreme west coast bird found almost exclusively in California it would be unlikely such a bird would be found in SE Louisiana.

The first two pictures of female Blackbirds show a pinkish color on their throats which is characteristic of female Red-winged Blackbirds and not female Tri-colored Blackbirds according to Petersonís Field Guide.

Best,
Tom

I always love to see your images.

The male certainly does look like a tricolored blackbird, which is surprising, since they are generally found in California--not in the Bay area, where I live or in southern California, but in the Central Valley. Apparently, tricoloreds are unlike RWBBs in that they nest in huge colonies of as many as 80,000 individuals. Diminishing wetlands have led them to nest in silage fields, where they risk being mowed down during harvest. According to the Fresno Bee, the drought is severely imperiling them and could land them on the endangered species list. See

I missed Tom's post while looking this up. I don't think anyone is claiming that the females might be tricoloreds, but it would be interesting to send the photo of the male to Audubon or Cornell for their opinion.

Hi Nancy,

It was written, "I just looked it up and you have Tri-colored Blackbirds in these shots". Since 'Blackbirds' and 'shots' were used I feel the females were considered to be Tri-coloreds as well.

Regardless, Birdied's pictures are magnificent as always. It would be interesting to hear what Audubon or Cornell has to say regarding the ID as it would be a first ever record for the state of Louisiana.

Best,
Tom

Yes indeed Birdie, I really do like the photos of the females, they are both so good in their own way that I can't pick one over the other. That said the flower on the bottom of 2 really does add to a beautiful composition. Well done, those are marvelous!

Hi Karl !

I think I fixed the white balance in the first one. Glad your very keen eye caught that
I will work on the third one . I did bring the shadows up and probably too much .

Again, thank you Karl. You make me look at these in a much more discerning way.

Now wouldn't that be something if it was a Tri-colored Blackbird. I looked at the original and it does not show any yellow. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the light , as the sun was very strong .

Hi Tom, thank you. I think the strong sun had something to do with it. I looked up the Tri-colored and the white they have is really white. I would be inclined to agree that this is a red winged blackbird.

Wonderful, Birdie; you've managed to capture some plumage detail together with softness of the background florals. My favorite is #2...looks like the cover of a Mother's Day Card!
