Mine is crazy sharp. Love the lens but I don't use it much...maybe once or twice last couple years I am wonder why since it's always in my bag. This is my 3rd copies...for some reason I could not get rid of it

Sharp enough. But beyond that it is the rendering I enjoy - the bokeh, the OOF areas. I enjoy the discipline of 135mm - thought long and hard about the 70-200 f2.8IS II but at this stage of the game it is simply too large and conspicuous. If I could shoot the world with two lenses they'd be the Sigma 35 f1.4 and the EF 135 f2L. It is a sharp lens, often sharper than my practice...

Hear this story over and over with this lens: "Love it but don't use it much".

Mine's pretty sharp wide open. I keep it as a backup to my 70-200/2.8L IS II, and it doesn't get much use.

Certainly my experience as well.

Used it last week for some candid shots of people in their office and it did remind me how good a lens it is.

Good timing with this thread, I've got the 135 on the brain right now. I like the idea of having the extra reach on my 1.3 sensor and I love the images I see from it...

If you love it then you need to change your kit so you have to use it. I use it all the time & love it. But then I don't have any alternatives.

I sold my 70-200 f/4 IS and bought the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. That's a great lens but too big for travel and too noticable for candids. The 135 is a great lens for candids and portraits!

At f/2.2, ISO 6400 - yes the gym is that dark. I use mine extensively (along with a 35mm f/1.4 and a 85mm f/1.8) for all indoor sports. The venues are old, dark with wildly changeable lighting values. f/2.8 is waaay too slow.

I also love the 135mm f/2.0 as a "macro" lens. I'll never sell it and I do use it. (I also own the 70-200 f/2.8L v2. Different lenses for different tasks.)

The only lens I have that I use wide open as a matter of preference, instead of necessity. Great for candid portraits. Great for indoor sports. Plenty sharp wide open, great bokeh, fast and accurate autofocus, not heavy or conspicuous, reasonable price. Updated with IS would make it better for the portraits, and more expensive.

I suspect these questions have been answered on previous threads but here goes: how is the focussing speed vs say the 85 f/1.8 or the 100L? Also, how does the 135 f/2 perform with a 1.4 TC?

This is a timely thread for me as I am thinking about buying a 135. My question is wether there is significant real world difference between the Canon and the Zeiss solely regarding image quality, pixel peeping aside. The size difference is not at all important to me and I have always enjoyed the solid, well made feel of Zeiss lenses. While auto focus is convenient, I do not object to using a manual focus lens. The price difference is however substantial. Right now, I am leaning toward the Zeiss but would love to hear from anyone who has had experience with both.

Can only speak to the 85 f/1.8 question as I don't have either the 100L or a TC. I find when shooting action sports in bad light that the 135 is a bit quicker to acquire focus. It's not huge and is somewhat dependent on subject, but I can regularly sense the 135 speed particularly after I've just switched from the 85. (I rotate lenses and positions as the games/matches progress.) I'd say of the three lenses I use the 35mm f/1.4 is a bit faster than the 135 which edges out the 85mm. Having said that the 85mm f/1.8 is absolutely competent, and I use it a lot. The real challenge in shooting sports with wide apertures is the narrow depth of field. If the focus point is just barely off it turns the central subject into an OOF mess leaving an exquisite background. Needless to say, I get plenty of garbage out of every game.

I think it's probably the sharpest lens at wide open of all the sub-f/2.8 lenses from Canon.
Radically so at the edges, but very much in the center too.
It does have a bit of LoCA/PF though.

I'm not quite sure it is the sharpest looking at each lens at their best setting, but it is probably Canon's sharpest if all lenses at set to wide open and wide open is less than f/2.8.

It does have amazing bokeh and very rich colors. Although it does suffer from some LoCA/PF so it's not quite pure with the great colors near wide open.

I definitely would not say it's the most versatile lens for a working photographer. I'd eactually say it's easily one the least! But to each their own. I will say that it regular tops of the list of "great lens than you use the least" lists.
