There is no doubt the 70-200 F2.8L is one of the great Canon EF-L lenses. Legendary! But the 70-300L IS is an under-rated lens that fits very well in some photographer's bags. I have it, and love it. But I also have other lenses that compete directly and they have their time and place. If I were pragmatic, I'd take my 70-300LIS every time, but honestly, I often take other lenses.
But the 70-300LIS is a true sleeper.

For the $$ you'll get for selling the 28-300L, you could pick up a 70-300L and a 35-350L (if you can find a clean one). That's exactly what I did. Got most of the best of both worlds for the same total investment.
