I've had some good luck with the 400mm 5.6 + 1.4x tc combo. Processing is the key to best results. Here are a few examples at 560mm.

Are these with the Canon 1,4X or a different brand? Also do you retain AF with the Canon. Would appreciate if you share the processing techniques to help newbies like me! Thanks

Yes, those were taken with the Canon 1.4x and no, I do not have AF with this combination. I just manual focus either through the viewfinder or with liveview if I am using a tripod. No biggie. For the post processing, I usually:

1. Make color/contrast/exposure adjustment.
2. Make a copy of the original photo and remove all of the luminance noise if the shot was taken at high ISO.
3. Paste noise cleaned photo into Photoshop
4. Create a layer with original photo with noise
5. Erase the subject only on the cleaned layer exposing the original layer underneath with uncleaned bird.
6. Run unsharp mask on the bird.
7. Enjoy!

Remove steps 2-5 if using low ISO values.

Shooting with that combo is a great way to get reach and sharp shots without extreme costs. I own 500 mk2 and the 800 but sometimes traveling conditions mandate that I bring the 400/1.4 combo instead. I did just that recently, here a few hand held shots from that combo.

Disclaimer: Imagemaster is indeed an image master and can make any lens combination look great.

RogerC - Many thanks for sharing your PP techniques. Hope others on the board can share their techniques as well - we can always learn something new from others with experience ! Perhaps you are very good with manual focus!

Based on the pics in this thread, looks like a good combo.
