p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Insert, or small camera bag to put in a hiking backpack?

So I am trying to find a good small insert or camera bag that is big enough to carry a 60d, with 18-135 attached and the 55-250 (with just a little room to upgrade to say a 17-55 and 70-300 at most. it doesn't have to have many pockets really just one to carry an extra battery would do. I was thinking of the crumpler 5mdh or haven large (or medium if my stuff would fit. considering i would be putting it in the top of my pack it doesn't need to be real stiff just want padding for my stuff. I was looking at just a insert to beginwith but with the haven being close to the price of the 5mdh I figured I might as well try to kill 2 birds with one stone (i have the adorama slinger now and feel it is far too bulky for what I have or plan on getting).

the bag I have is the camelbak vantage ft if that helps any.

And now that I think about it the reason I had chosen the haven is that it would be easy to open through that small side zipper you can see in the picture. but now that I have decided to put the camera bag on top I guess it does not need to have the drawstring opening.

The Crumpler bags are heavily padded so tend to be large for the amount of storage space they offer. For a smallish daypack where space is at a premium I'd use an insert for camera gear, of which there are many in addition to the Haven:

Timbuk2 Snoop insert: http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/snoop-camera-insert

I will check those out. but it is not that small of a pack it is a 2100 cubic inch overnight pack. The pack safe looks interesting, and I had been looking at the mountainsmith when I wanted something to go in the bottom but chose against it because of no top padding but now that it will be in the top of my pack I will look at it again.

and remember I don't really need a very big bag/insert because I only plan on carrying my small kit listed above.

Mountain Smith and Clik Elite make inserts that may work for you. I use this Clik Elite insert sometimes, works well: http://www.amazon.com/Clik-Elite-CE510RE-Capsule-Small/dp/B0037NZA16/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1398953840&sr=8-12&keywords=Clik+elite

PacSafe has an insert as well. I use either the PacSafe or MountainSmith in my CamelBak 14er for going light and fast.

Peace,

Todd

Well even though I am just kinda talking to myself here I will at least put that the I got the Ape case cubeze Yesterday and after a little adjusting of the inner dividers I can get either my 18-135 (with hood reversed) or my 55-250, either attached to my 60d with the other next to it in this bag (which is exactly what I was hoping for because I really think the next size bigger (2.25 inches longer, .5 inch wider (only thing I wish mine had), and like 1.5 inches shorter (doesn't really matter to me either way). and for 15 bucks with prime shipping I don't mind that if I actually ever upgrade my lenses they will not fit in here lol but this will hole me plenty well until I can get something better.

Glad its working for you, I bought the bigger mountain smith insert but it was a little to big for my needs. Ended up buying a Tenba messenger bag that works pretty well for everything but backpacking, I have about decided that since the camera and a lens stay out most of the time I just need a couple of lens pouches.

I really thought about the pouches but this ape case is almost as small as a couple of cases and I can get my camera out of the rain If I need. I am still kind of debating on going with a lens case big enough for both of my lenses and just switch between them, but even If I go that route the 15 bucks I paid for the ape case isn't that much and will work good for packing it for flights if I need to.
