Thought I'd buy the Kenko 1.4x TelePlus MC4 DGX and try it with my 150-600mm. I did have to MFA the combo to +9 where the lens alone is MFA to +3. I could only get the combo to AF in Live View but I like the image it turned out so I may keep it and MF it. Heres just four I've taken just a few minutes ago so you can see what the combo will do. Just in my back yard. Will take it to the lake thin week end. I'm sure in others hands the combo could work better.

Reminds me of my bare 70-300 non-L, except with more contrast .

And I like the 'spherical bokeh' effect in the first shot, looks like something the 50L would produce!

Sorry but those are horrible. Based on those photos I'd send the lens back.

They all look soft on my monitor. I think you may need to use a magnified live view or tethered display to focus manually.

Your crops are extreme it appears and severely degrade the actual image. I've had the lens and it is sharp. I see no reason why adding the 1.4x would degrade the images to this level.
Technique and presentation...........politely walk before you run. Basics are extremely important to the foundation of adding a TC. Why ISO 1600, get back to ISO 400.

Send the lens back? Tamron explicitly states that lens is not designed to be used with a teleconverter!

Mine seem to work ok with an old Kenko TC. 1.4 with taped pins. Handheld. No need to send it back, Just more practice.

Thanks for everybodies honest opinion of the IQ of this combo. I'll take it to the lake this weekend like I said and if it doesn't do any better with a little practice I'm sending it back. I do like the colors and contrast and hope some practice will help out on the IQ.

Strong crops + 7D at higher ISOs is a recipe for disaster- the results you're getting are exactly what they should be- mud .

But that's okay; I have the same problem shooting birds in the backyard with an EOS-M through Canon's 70-300 non-L like I mentioned above. The EOS-M is a little better with the noise/grain, but it still produces shots that look like 'mud' with that lens, though my issues have different fixes than yours.

One thing to try would be to work on your stabilization technique and try to drop shutter speed while narrowing the aperture and/or lowering the ISO. You'll likely have to overshoot your subjects to catch them when they're still, sure, but you'll be giving the lens + TC + sensor combination a better chance at producing a quality shot. Also, do your best to use the focal length and foot zoom instead of cropping- filling the frame with more of your subjects will give you a decent chance at getting files that can be properly scrubbed up in post-processing a la Imagemaster .

Also- can you post full-size versions of your shots so we can get a better understanding of what your gear is actually resolving?

When shooting @ 840mm + high pixel density + high ISO + not the nicest light + Heavy crops, the results will not be optimal.

This is the only opinion that matters, keep it and enjoy it, after all its a hobby for your enjoyment

EXIF does not show the correct focal length or f-stop. For more details on the lens and TC, see:

Tony, I think you nailed the focus on that one.

I've only tried using my kenko 1.4x (taped pins) on a few shots of the moon. Will hopefully get out this weekend and play around with it more. This shot was at 1/160 @ ISO 200.
