p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 70-200 II w/ 1.4 III vs Canon 70-300L?

Has anybody had a chance to compare these two. I need some more reach on my outdoor shots for things like baseball and air shows for this spring and sumer and was wondering if anybody has had a chance to compare the two. Thanks

The 70-300 isn't anywhere near the quality or price point of the 70-200L II. Why not look at a 100-400? They are around $1500 now during rebate season.

I do agree that a 100-400 L might fit those uses a bit better but from everything I've read the 70-300 L IS is a very nice lens with excellent IQ & a fast AF.

I assume you're thinking of the 70-300 non-L. The 70-300L is an amazing lens, extremely sharp, and in my opinion, just as high quality as the 70-200 F2.8 II. It's also around $1400, I think.

I'd say that the 70-300L splits the difference in image quality, AF, and IS between the 100-400L and the 70-200L II- the 70-300 non-L is worth all of the $350 it goes for when sold as refurbished.

I am looking at the L lens, and I will be flat honest, I have not been impressed with the 100-400L lens, especially the push pull zoom.

I own both.
the 70-300L focuses a touch faster than 70-200 with TC, and tracks better.
Both are very sharp, the 70-200 combo would be of course a 280 F4, vs 300 f5.6.
the 70-300L is much smaller and lighter than the 70-200 combo.

They aren't comparable lenses as far as I can tell. One is sharper at a wider aperture at every overlapping focal length, has better IS capabilities, and can focus faster than I can think. The other works in daylight and has a little bit longer focal length.

if you are planning on working in dimly lit areas or taking portraits, a 70-200/2.8 is the lens you want. There is a reason most professional photographers have one.

See the comparison for yourself:

The 70 300L is excellent for outdoor daytime sports. It is lighter than my 300 2.8 IS and I like having the zoom. Pics are excellent in sunlight and cloudy lighting. Tracking is fast and accurate with a high keeper rate. I personally like the 100 400 for wildlife and other things but NOT for sports. The AF on the 70 300L is much quicker. I enjoy shooting football and baseball and keep the lens for just these things.

You don't need to spend the extra money and carry the extra weight of the 70-200. I doubt that the 70-200 with a 2x TC produces better results that the 70-300L with a 1.4x TC.

Tony, I think you mean 1.4x tc. and no it does not, though with both at 5.6, its pretty close. however, the AF is not as fast as the bare 70-300. I find 70-300 a great lens for hummers. better keeper rate than 100-400 due to its better AF and of course sharper at 300 than 100-400 at 400, as long as you can get close enough to the birds.
