Plain and simple, does anyone have knowledge of using a filter on good glass diminishing the quality of the images that come out of it? This may be a stupid question, but I'm unsure. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Or even comparison images?

this has been beaten to the point of insanity.

in the bell curve of life it pretty much ends up equal on both sides of the curve.
it is dependent on the quality of the filter used and the situation.

quite a few references to this issue to be researched by you. all opinions with no real proof (unless you are using a old green glass coke bottle as a filter) because in the end posting a good image on the web generally reduces it to less then adequate to judge.

you do not need a UV one as they have nice clear multicoated glass ones for a few years now. in my work i choose to use one.

let the games begin.

I should have realized this had to have been beaten before haha. In my defense I did search for a similar thread before posting! I suppose I should ask, does a lens hood offer just as much protection? My only worry with using just a hood is that something straight (like a branch) could sneak in and scratch the glass. Am I just overly concerned for my glass?

Lloyd Chambers has some good info on filters on his site: http://diglloyd.com/index-free.html#Filters

Your likely to get as many opinions as responses though. Best to test yourself and figure out what works for you.

You are more likely to get injured driving to the store to buy the UV or plain glass filter.

Yes.

I'll save ya some time... 2filter.com look for Marumi DHG Super Clear Protectors.
Shit happens, saved my 18-35 f1.8 at the rodeo last week...dirt clod direct hit.
Nick in the filter coating, front lens element perfectly fine. $36 well spent. Just sayin'

The best protective filter for lenses is the opaque black one.

I did not know multicoat filters were made. Do any particular brands hold better?

Lets stir the pot some.

I have a Nikon 200-400mm g VR II that came from Nikon with a clear "removable" filter attached. You even get a case for the filter from Nikon. My 300mm f2.8G and 500mm f4 G both have a non-removable protective element from the factory.

I wonder, does this possibly indicate Nikon's position on the subject?

Hmm I suppose.. perhaps Nikon puts there own glass on as a protective filter. Thus, assuring it's quality. So perhaps with the more expensive filters it wouldn't interfere with IQ as a cheap one may.

I use clear protective filters on all my lenses and there is no loss of quality. The only time they come off is when shooting at night with artificial light sources.

Just put one on there. There is pretty much no visible difference when shooting with or without one. The only time I take mine off is as mentioned above; night shots with artificial lighting. You tend to get some green ghosting.

The green ghosting is there during the daytime too, but just not as visible because everything is generally bright. What it does to daytime images is reduce the colour contrast, sometimes locally, sometimes rather globally.

You mean if I don't go to a rodeo then I don't need a protective filter?

Yep, ruined a 200 2.8 front element at a rodeo from a flying rock. Have used protective filters shooting rodeos ever since. Had two more occasions when rocks hit the filters.

There are conditions where using a filter makes a lot of sense.
