p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · [Need Info] Banff and Abraham Lake area

Hello members here and especially Canadian residents,

I have made flight reservation for December travel.

I will be flying to Moab, UT for 7 days staying and then flying to Calgary, AB for another 8 days of photo shooting spree.

Sounds cold and dreadful but I have been longing for winter photography for a long time and this is it.

I am kind of okay at Moab this time, but I am not familiar with the Canada areas. I have visited Calgary and Banff twice before but still not quite sure what to expect in terms of photography.

I have requested some members here privately and got some information to work with.

I got - Two Jack Lake, Vermilion Lake, Moraine Lake around Banff, and Abraham Lake for ice bubbles.

My schedule is as following: Arriving Calgary on 12/13 and leaving on 12/21. I am looking to spend 3-4 days in Abraham Lake area in the later part because the owner of Aurum Lodge told me that the later the better in terms of lake freezing over there.

--
I would appreciate it very much if anyone, please, let me have any suggestions as to where to look for photography, where to stay, and what kind winter equipment like snow shoes, etc to bring.

Thanks in advance.

Kee

Have you had a look here: http://www.howtophotographthecanadianrockies.com There are a number of photography guides, but if you can get this book, http://www.amazon.ca/Photograph-Canadian-Rockies-Darwin-Wiggett/dp/1551536412 it is a good place to start.

Found this as well:

Also, contact Scott Stoness, I'm sure he will be able to give you some pointers.

Regards.....Pete

For foot accessories, make sure to buy the ice spikes that Aurum Lodge sells, or if you need them before get good ones with big spikes. I bought my own "chain type" from a local store and they were overpriced, and ineffective. It is pretty funny watching people who cheapen out and try not to use any sort of spikes. They give up fast, or slow if you look at their movement speed

Also during the day when shooting isn’t all that great, you can head to Johnston Canyon (Between Banff and Lake Louise), or Cline Canyon (it leads into Abraham Lake) for some sweet icicles. They should be in prime condition early in the year when you come. Johnston will be busy and easy, Cline will be vacant and sketchy.

Thanks Justin for the info about the ice spikes. Also the backup plan in case.. for Johnston and Cline Canyons.
I also thank you for Aurum Lodge info. I mentioned your name when I contacted the lodge. They are expensive but I have no choice..:-)
Feed me any more info please. I am excited about this trip in December.

Q: Are ice spikes and crampons the same? What kind would be suitable for ice/snow walking? Frame materials and shapes to recommend?
