Hi guys!

I got this lens yesterday, I am trying it and deciding if replacing my 80-400VR, or go for a 300 2.8VR instead.

Maybe somebody wants to post their pictures with the Sigma? I'd like to compare these pictures to the 300 2.8VR post.
I tried the lens yesterday and seems very good, also AF is finally fast and way more accurate than the older model.

I'll post some picture myself asap.

Thanks everybody!
G.

Very cool shots guys, thanks for posting!

Did anybody shot with both the 300 2.8VR and the Sigma 120-300?
I am debating for which one to go, I do love zooms though, and I like to compose in camera as much as I can.
I have the 80-400VR and it is good, but I want something brighter.

Any advice?

Thanks!
G.

I've had the Sigma, the VR and the 300 2.8 AF-S II... My favorite was the AF-S II due to it's light weight and it was as sharp as the VR but it was such a breeze to hand hold. The Sigma is not much behind them in IQ IMHO.

sjms I guess you tried the 120-300 2.8 S and like it better than the 300 2.8VR, is that because of the zoom flexibility? Or what?

Thanks
G.

Ok had a chance to go out shooting a bit more tonight.
Was lucky enough to get an Osprey around, after a bit of hiding he came a bit closer and I got some shots.

I must say I am SERIOUSLY impressed by this lens. The AF has been great (with the 2xTC on) even after the sun had set, also the IQ is very good, f8 seems to be necessary for critical sharpness with the TC, at 5.6 there is a visible CA.

I haven't had the chance to tune it and customize it with the dock, I'll probably do that later or tomorrow, I am very curious to see how the AF performs in speed or accuracy mode.

So far I am very happy.
I had an OS version copy that was very good but the AF was totally inconsistent, after a trip to sigma it came back without any solution and still front focusing hard on the long range.

I think the new version is worth every single $ just to be able to customize AF speed and Fine Tuning at different distances.

Keep the shots coming!

2013 Sport version, D800, 1/200, 300mm, f/4, ISO 800

I love the versatility of the 120-300 zoom range, it takes Sigma 1.4 and 2.0 TCs well, it's almost as sharp as the Nikon 300 f/2.8, AF is fast and the multi-focal length, multi-distance AF fine tune with the USB dock is awesome!

It really depends on your personal needs.

If you want a pure birding/portrait lens then the 300/2.8 VRII is beyond comparison, the 80-400G is versatile and light (compared to these two heavyweights !) but is also my least used of the three (the Sigma now sold to help pay for the 300/2.8) and the 80-400G will probably be sold to help fund a lightweight backup kit for when I'm birding trails with the 300/2.8 and TCs.

The 80-400G is an allround lens, I don't think it excels in any one specific area but is very very good in many. The slow aperture is my bugbear with that lens (and the very so-so AF performance with the TC14EII).

The versatility of the Sigma 120-300/2.8 and Sigma TCs (x1.4 and x2.0) is superb. For our NZ trip it was (along with a Zeiss 21mm for landscapes and 85/1.8G for low-light) the perfect lens. It is heavy though (virtually the same as the 300/2.8 VRII).

All from NZ where we traveled around for 6 weeks. Wife, landscape & birds.

Hi Frogfish!

Thanks for your kind reply.

The 80-400G is a great lens. I absolutely love it exactly because is an all-rounder and is light enough to be hand-hold for long and also to bring for a hike.
It's very sharp, too, I tried it with the 1.4 but didn't like the results, that's not something I'd suggest.

The 300 2.8VR is a great lens, we all know that, but I like to compose in camera and love the flexibility of the zoom. It is also heavy.
Not being a zoom you have to bring with you something else like a 70-200 and the TCs as well. Also I'll have to get something between 16 and 70, so it means another lens is needed (maybe a fixed, but still...).

I have been testing the 120-300 S for a week now and overall I am very pleased. IQ with the 2x is not on par with the 300 2.8VR but the zoom gives me lots more for my shooting style.
Also I can just bring the 120-300 with the 1.4x and 2x and the 24-120VR f4 to have very wide range coverage and a good quality. I could add the 16-35VR f4 for even wider coverage.

Another factor is the price, the Sigma is almost as good as the 300 2.8VR but it's a fraction of the price. This means I could buy a 500 or a 600 later instead of dropping a lot of cash now.

At this point I think I'll keep the Sigma, what I am not sure of is if I want to sell the 80-400VR or not...for now it's on sale with the 70-200 but I might change my mind...

I'll put another picture here or this yellow-headed blackbird calling under the rain:

Sigma 120-300 2.8 S + Sigma 2x TC on D7100 in 1.3x crop mode = 1170mm | 1/640th @f8 ISO 1600

Thanks a lot!
G.

Here is a link that has been floating around for awhile and Nasim has some graphical comparisons between the lenses that might help put things in perspective.

I usually like Nasim reviews, but on the Sigma 120-300 2.8 he must have had a VERY bad copy because I don't agree with 80% of what he says, also it seems he is a bit biased since the collar is not that bad as he is saying and so the hood that is heavy, but that's it.

Thanks for posting though!

Wow, some great images for page 1 of this thread! I've been impressed by this lens. AF is superb, and it's very sharp wide open.

I have to agree there. I felt he gave the Sigma an unfair amount of bashing both optically and ergonomically. In other reviews the Sigma gave a very good account of itself compared with the Nikon and Canon 300mm f/2.8 primes.

I don't mind the collar at all and I don't think the hood is heavy. Even if it is heavier than the comparable Nikon and Canon hoods, have you seen how cheap it is to replace?

Yeah I don't think the ergonomic is bad at all, can't say is worse than the 200-400 to be honest.
The anatomic handle could have been useful, but is not a big deal, maybe somebody will make a new collar.
As for the hood, maybe even there somebody will do a Carbon Fiber one, what do you mean how cheap is to replace?

This was a good buy for me. the money i saved from buying the nikon 300mm2.8 will go towards a nikon 500f/4 or sigma 800mm f/5.6. Few more shots.
