My tc20iii has been sitting in my camera bag gathering dust and this weekend I was shooting from a fixed location with large concentrations of birds so moving wasn't an option without spooking birds. Having had poor luck with 2x tele in the past I decided to give it a go one more time on a whim. Maybe its the new AF system on the D5/D500 or maybe it just pairs well with my lens but I was fairly pleased with the results. The sharpness reduction and light loss is a concern but the AF wasn't as handicapped as I have experienced in the past...maybe the AF on the D5/D500 play better with it. All in all it allowed me to get a few shots that I wouldn't have otherwise and left me plenty of pixels for good sized prints if needed.

Out of curiosity and with low expectations I put the D500 on with the 2x giving me an effective of 1800mm. On a gimbal and with high shutter speed I would say it was way more usable than I would have thought. In hindsight I was at 1/1600 and could have gotten away with 1/2500-1/3200 but it worked.

This was only with the 1.4x tele on the D5 but added it because I was happy with the way it turned out.

Just wanted to mention that I've been perusing this 600 thread and.....WOW !

600mm images are in a class by themselves.

here is a young bobcat in the everglades. He was about a year old when I took this photo. I
kept track of his mom and siblings during the period they were born to my last siting of him which is when this
photo was taken.
