The 600/4 is MY favourite lens for wildlife.

By adding two teleconverters :

4mpx - thanks - and great shots! That D4s seems to play nice with the 600

This is a question for Steve Perry. Your photo's are spectacular and it looks like you have shot some using a 1.4 teleconverter to get the 850mm focal length. I also shoot with the 600mm F4 and find that using the 1.4 teleconverter never gives me clear pictures no matter what settings I use. I have been shooting with a D7100 and have fine tuned the lens and teleconverter to no avail. The 600 shoots fine on it's own without the teleconverter. What is the secret to using the teleconverter. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words

I wish I had a good answer for you. I did an AF fine tune with it (I actually did it on the fly in the field - don't tell anyone since that's not the proper method ) and it's been pretty good.

It's not as sharp or consistent as the naked 600mm, but it's still pretty darn good. I do stop down about a half stop (when I can) and that seems to sharpen it up just a bit. Even wide open though, the combo nails tack sharp images all the time.

Now I'm going to start guessing.

Guess # 1 - I know that some TCs are better than others. I wonder if maybe you should try another copy.

Guess # 2 - Maybe there's something up with the AF on your camera. If you had access to another D7100, it might be interesting to test.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance, maybe someone else will chime in.

Thanks for your response Steve, much appreciated. I had the same problem when I used that combo with my D300. This may indicate that the problem is in the TC, however, the TC works well on my 70-200mm F2.8. The numbers on the TC are AF-S TC-14EII 1.4X, if this is any indication. Thanks again for your help.

All these images make me drool. I tried someone's 600mm with TC2 (latest one) on my D800 at a photo workshop a few weeks ago. Just shot a couple because I did not want her to loose her shots. She was kind enough to let me mount my camera and TC on her precious 600mm.

Thank you.

another thread I can join in. I had a 600VR for a little while, great lens, in the end I ended up downsizing to the 500VR and paying some bills, but here's a few I took with 'er.

Nice shots! I always wanted a 600VR but was afraid ... not of the cost of the lens, but of the resulting chiropractor fees from carrying it around.

Very nice series, asiostygius. The first one is top notch !
In my opinion, all Nikkor 600/4 are outstanding in term of sharpness and colours rendering.

It's weird like that. I can tell you that my TC plays really well with my 600mm (and 500 before I traded), OK with my 70-200 and was pretty much unusable with my 200-400 (other people have great luck with the combo).

I'd say consider trying another one and see if it makes a difference. You could always return it if it's no help - or sell your current one if it does help.

The VR system on the 600/4 definitely is the best of what I have used so far :

D2X, 600 VR, f/5.6, 1/20", 100 ISO. Lens resting on a car window.

and a 1:1 crop of the above image to get you right in there
