p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wheel of Light (aurora)

Last week after attending a free concert—bud's wife won tickets—I took a detour with plans to head to spot to shoot the aurora. The forecast for aurora, at that moment, was good. After about 30min of driving things started to go down hill with aurora activity so I decided to head home. Thinking ahead I decided to take a longer route home in case the aurora showed up. I ended up at this giant metal wheel when the aurora made a small appearance. I was really disappointed with all the surrounding farm lights but decided to shoot anyway. This wheel is just off the highway and I waited for the right moment to shoot this 3 image pano. 2 cars coming from opposite directions provided light to illuminate the wheel. Which, by the way, is about 12ft high. I used my Samyang 14mm/2.8 lens for this.

Two versions. Second slightly darker and more realistic. 1st has a little more impact.

Click to view on black (recommended)!

Thanks for looking.

Hey Scott,

Nice creativity here. I do prefer the darker version. Did you take any shots a little further back from the wheel? While it's interesting, I think the wheel is dominating the shot a little too much.

I like the darker version too.. What is on the one spoke of the wheel I keep wanting to look at?

Cool shots - sorry, but I'm not sure which I like best - maybe something in the middle?

Scott,
I really like the way you tight together the night sky, aurora, and a very interesting foreground.
When looking at both side-by-side, I tend to prefer the darker one (second). It looks more natural to me.
Great job!

Thank you all very much. Seems to be pretty unanimous in favour of the darker version. I too prefer the darker image.

Thanks Jim. Unfortunately there was almost no solid ground around this wheel. My heals were almost in the water taking thus shot. To get this view I had to shoot three photos on portrait orientation to get all of the wheel and aurora.
