Lance how close were you to the subjects ? For the life of me, I can not get good detail with the TC.

Birdie

Thank you very much, Birdied!

I am unsure of how close I was to most of the subjects but I get reasonable detail regardless of distance. I can say that I was very close to the pigeon, or fruitdove to be correct, close to the minimum focus of the 500 at about 4mts. The little wrens in image 1 and 2 would have also been fairly close, maybe between 4-6mts. The egret would have been a little further at about 8-10mts. The kestrel at about 10-15mts and cropped slightly.

Here is a shot of someone on a cliff ledge at maybe 80-100mts at a guess and a crop of that shot.

Those are amazing shots. Even after sending my lens and TC to Nikon, I am not happy with using the TC.

Thanks again, Birdied. That's a shame about the 500 + 1.4x TC, but I will ask the obvious question, have you AF fine tuned the combo? Mine needed plus or minus 5 from memory (can't remember whether it was plus or minus).

I bought a used 500 f/4 AF-S D (non VR) on the Buy/Sell forum and absolutely love it.
It took longer than I thought to get used to shooting it handheld, but finally got it dialed in on my D800 with and without the TC-14E II.

^ Very nice set, Kirk. You are a much better photographer than me because that 500 f4 used to be mine and I did not get nice photos like your

Great set and great low angle as well, Kirk.
Were you lying on the ground handholding the 500?

Thanks for the good words Steve. I was lying on the ground and using a beanbag screwed into the foot for support... works great.

Got it, thanks!
I have a home made bean bag with skimmer ground pod, works great together at ground level or from car widow.

headed down to Minneapolis last weekend for a concert, stopped at my regular haunts along the way along the shores of Lake Superior, the trip down and back was loaded with fog on the lake...and darn cold for this time of year

I find the TC14EII to be acceptable with my 500VR, though I've given up using the TC17EII and especially the TC20EIII with it. Normally I try to stop down a little, but here's a wide-open shot with the TC17EII...maybe 12 metres or so.
