Thanks, Steve. The blood moon was very very dim here and I was consistently at 1s or longer shutter speed which in hindside was too slow. 1s was occasionally ok but really needed to be faster. Unfortunately any faster shutterspeed, I would need to be at higher iso where shadow had too much noise for my liking.
I think I need to find equvalent to at least 800mm FF with F4 or faster

I don't think there's any significant image quality difference between the AF-S I, AF-S II, and AF-S VR models. The latest AF-S VR FL however is an improvement. PhotographyLife Review
The AF-S II reduces weight and has a newer AF module, the AF-S VR obviously adds vibration control.
