I am thinking of getting a longer zoom. Something more reaching than my 70-200/2.8L IS.
What would you recommend?

Budget, not set yet. I am looking to save up for it.

Thanks.

Low light? Daylight? How much reach do you need? Still or moving subjects?

Need to know the answers to those questions in order to give you an appropriate recommendation

Best for what?

The 100-400 is probably Canon's most popular long zoom. I am very happy with mine. YMMV.

I'd go either 100-400 or 70-300L version. Unless you can save $11000 and get the 200-400 but that brings with it size and weight issues that must be evaluated for your shooting environment. The only other one is the recent Tamron 150-600. Much discussion about this one in recent months so read those threads and see the pluses and minuses.

A few suggestions come to mind:

1.4 extender
100-400L
Tamron 150-600
70-300L
300 f/4 L

I like the 100-400 myself.

a 2x extender would get you pretty far on a great lens like the 70-200/2.8. 1.4 would be better if you are taking photos of action. 100-400 will give you a bit better AF from what I have been told but I haven't used it before. The new Tamron 150-600 is supposedly pretty great if you can get used to the AF intricacies/problems/features.

That said, what are you using it for?

Good advice from arbitrage. I have both, the Canon 100-400 and 70-300L and either would be a good choice.

You have to tell us more to get more than just people telling you what their favorite lens is:

--An actual price range
--The critical focal length range (or what body you plan to use it with and what you plan to shoot)

For me, the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, paired with the 1.4xIII and the 2xIII, gives me a great deal of flexibility in zoom range, with excellent sharpness through 280mm and good sharpness through 400. AF with the 1.4x is fine; AF with the 2x is still good, but a bit slower.

But this works for me, because I have a 500/4 for when I really need a big gun, so I need 280-400 not so often (and the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II is the best option in the 70-280 range, IMO).

YMMV

How do you zoom the 300 f4 L?

What do you need it to do. The Canon's recommended have the fastest AF so if it's for action the 70-300 L or 100-400 L are the way to go but if it is just for general purpose there are alternatives.

I have the 70-200/2.8L IS II and 100-400L IS. AI Servo AF on the 100-400L is slightly faster than on the 70-200/2.8L IS II + 2x III. Single Shot AF is more or less the same.

I posted some comparison images from the Mk II + 2x III and 100-400L here,

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1154527

Is there any pressing reason for getting a longer zoom? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

You can start extending your reach with the 1.4x and 2x Extenders (I moved up to the Mk III versions - they're better). Then you can save up for a 300/2.8L IS. Once you start "going long", the big prime lenses really kick in.

the 300 2.8 IS is just a gateway drug. you could go w/ a version 1 to save some coin over version 2. if you are not going to go w/ the 300 2.8 IS, i'd look at something that offers at least 400mm.

on the lesser expensive side, i have the 100-400mm and the tamron 150-600mm.

i like the 100-400 over the tamron, but if you want 600mm the tamron is the cheapest option. there are also several sigma lenses that give you a nice focal length, but i have no experience those.

you said you wanted a "zoom" but the canon 400mm 5.6 is a great lens, fast af, super sharp.

if you got the money, get a big white (300mm 2.8 IS, 400mm 2.8 IS, 500mm 4.0 IS or one of the even more expensive newer lenses)

I have a Mk II 1.4x that I use often with my 100-400L - what improvement will I see by moving up to a Mk III?

He asked for a zoom but he also didn't specify what he needed it for, as you pointed out. A lot of people buy zooms only to sit at the end. So, he may not need a zoom. And the 300 f/4L could, for all we know, suffice.

Seems a bit ridiculous to get a 300/4 prime when he asked for a zoom and has a 70-200/2.8 zoom. A 1.4 telext would be just as good, a lot cheaper, and still be a zoom.

Thanks for the recommendations. Now to start pricing them out to see how long before I can afford it.

Just in terms of image quality, this is how I'd rank the tele-zooms:

1) Canon 200-400
2) Canon 70-300L
3) Sigma 120-300
4) Sigma 300-800
5) Canon 100-400
6) Tamron 150-600
7) Sigma 50-500
8) Sigma 150-500
9) Sigma 120-400
10) Tamron 200-500

Obviously, this does not take into account price, size, weight, build, versatility or AF performance.

Well if you own all the lenses listed in your profile, you may as well just get one of everything.
