OK, so it's a little off topic, sort of. But it certainly doesn't fit anywhere else that I can see.

I'm interested in possibly getting a reasonably decent dash camera for the car. Does anybody have any experience and knowledge in this area?

Much appreciated, thanks in advance.

are you talking about a constant recording dash cam (ie for insurance if you have a crash)?

or a dash cam for other uses ?

if for other use then first thought would be a GoPro

Thanks, Ian. I was kind of thinking both, but I would guess that the GoPro would be more versatile (usable for other functions).

It sounds like you need just the video capability - that you're not interested in stills, is that right? You could look at Canon's line of camcorders... I'm not sure how easily they'd mount to your dash though, since there's kinda big.

I'm actually wanting the video, but I also like the small size and the GPS capability. Primary function would be as a dash cam, so while I wouldn't mind the flexibility to use it elsewhere (sports, cycling, etc.), those attributes would be secondary.

I'm kind of eyeing up the Vacron CDR-E22. It is very driver-oriented, but not as versatile for other purposes as the GoPro.

Side note - I'm surprised that Canon and/or Nikon don't compete directly with GoPro for the "strap-on" sports camera market.

The GoPro would be my first choice. I'll have to check out the Vacron...

Yeah, the Vacron seems awesome. It logs your location and travel speed! That could be quite useful information.

I appreciate the input, pinhole.

I'm still gathering information. No need for me to make a snap decision.
There seem to be a few alternatives, but there's no "DPReview" or "SLRgear" site for dash cams so the hard data isn't really out there.

Thanks, all, for the opinions.

I have the DVR-027 in my Jeep, and I like it a lot. I turned off the infrared lights for night shooting because all they did was reflect off the windshield into the lens (a common issue)

Have you looked into using your smartphone as a dashcam?
This one works well, although I don't use it frequently

Just keep on searching Google, there are a LOT of sites in North America selling that stuff...dashcams specifically for vehicles.

I have a GoPro Hero2 that I used as a dash cam for a bit. My use was mostly for off road and backwoods trails. I was pretty underwhelmed and don't remember keeping any of the footage. The newer go pros probably have been updated but the major problem that I had was with metering. I had it mounted with the windshield suction mount and it always metered off of the windshield so if it picked up a glare the outside looked dark, if it was in a shadow (as it was most of the time) the outside was a little to bright.

I love the go pro for all the other outdoor stuff but for a dash cam I'd look into something more designed for being a dash cam.

I have no experience with real dashcams, but I have used my gopro countless times in different spots of my car and it works great. I would imagine just the capability to take it out and use it for countless other things would be a huge bonus.

I'm experimenting with a GoPro 3+ - we'll see how it goes for that function. It is an interesting and simple little device.

I suppose I could always dash-mount the 5D3 with the fisheye lens.
