This glitch has been reported by others - i.e. both the screen and EVF go black while attempting to take an image and may take up to 20 seconds before it clears and allows another shot to be taken.

I've been able to repeatedly simulate this problem using different EF lenses as follows:
With the camera in "Spot Metering" mode and attempting to focus and meter on a black (or dark) object with a bright background the camera may start hunt between dark and light.
While doing so it will sometimes freeze requiring the camera to be turned off and on again or wait for up to 20 seconds before it resets itself.

I'm not sure if this is an issue due only to the latest firmware update. The body used in this case is the A7r and the lenses are the FE 55mm and FE 24-70mm. The problem also occurs with different batteries and memory cards.

It is most annoying when this happens and am wondering if others have been able to isolate this issue before reporting it to Sony.
Cheers

List your settings so others can emulate as close as possible your camera and situation.

A7r Bug
The following are the camera settings. These do not include any video settings or items related to file management…

It should be noted the brightness between the dark area focused on and background is significant. Also, the dark areas do not have strong contrast for autofocus to lock on.
This occurs mostly outdoors, but can be replicated indoors. The method I used to replicate this issues is a dormant flat screen monitor set in front of a bright North facing window.
Hoping to hear from anyone that has encountered a similar issue.
Cheers
