p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pick a six lens kit for your body of choice...

After much buying and selling the last few months I'm finally really happy with all my gear. I don't shoot wildlife nor do my kids have any sports that put them too far away (yet) so my "happy" list is:

Tokina 16-28 2.8 for UW
35L for walk around
85L for walk around / portraits
135L for low light outdoor sports or indoor sports
70-200 II for outdoor sports, and sometimes indoors with good lighting
24-70 F/4 for handheld video use
1.4x TC

Each lens has a purpose and the 135L gets used the least, but it was very handy last winter for indoor basketball. Took the family to the Henry Ford museum a couple weeks ago and had a bag with the 24-70 F/4 and just found myself using the 35L all the time.

I know this goes against the forum rules, but I'm just here to say I'm very happy with this setup + the 5d3. I use Magic Lantern too and shoot raw video.

There have been a few of these 'best kit' threads as of late, my reply's were quite quick so this one I'll think on a bit longer...a follow-up post is forthcomming.

You've peeked my interest tho, you have the 24-70L IS and I would appreciate any thoughts you might share regarding it's use on your 5D3; image quality, ease of use, weight, AF speed, even the macro feature if you've tried it.

I've been thinking about replacing my 24-85 with the 24-70 or the 24-105. With most of the subjects I shoot the f4Ls meet my needs; their lighter weight is a key factor.

Any help would be much appreciated, apologies for hijacking your thread

Of all the canon fast primes I have, 50L is the one I use most on 1Ds2, 5D2 and recently A7R. Is this weird or what

Nonsense, that's what threads are for; to share information.

I started the 5d3 with the 24-105L and really liked the lens - like weight, sharp enough, IS, good for video. On a whim I rented a 24-70 Tamron VC and took some test shots - the Tamron was sharper @ F/2.8 than the 24-105@ F/4, so I bought the Tamron and sold the Canon. Used the Tamron for almost a year; I was just never thrilled with my keeper rate for autofocus performance, and it seems to have a life of it's own doing AFMA adjustments.

For example, 24mm @ 50x focal length I would get something like -3 and then at 70mm I'd get + 14. Do the same test again (I ran it several times and averaged the results) with one step back and the AFMA results would be vastly different. I was annoyed with the zoom/focus being in the opposite direction as my other Canon lenses, and never completely in love with the vignette (it matters in video mode since there's no built-in lens profile for a 3rd party lens). So I bought a Canon 24-70 2.8. Razor sharp, but very heavy and I missed IS in video mode. Did some more investigation and picked up the 24-70 F/4 and I've been very happy - it's the closest IMO for sharpness, contrast and color as the 2.8 (but obviously you lose a stop) - much lighter and the hybrid IS is great for video. The IS is much quieter if you use the built-in mics as I do sometimes for handheld video work - the 24-105 while effective was a bit on the noisy side. I don't use the "macro" mode much but it's there.

Overall, I'm thrilled with the 24-70 F/4. Should be IMO about a $750 lens; couple hundred bucks more than a used 24-105. The distortion seems less wide open, and the 24-35 range isn't all cramped together. Great lens for daytime / video use.

I love the 50L and I've owned 2 of them; the focus shift when stopping down / outer focus points just drove me crazy. I'm sitting by waiting to hear from others on the new Sigma 50.

Sorry to hear that and I hope the sigma 50A will work out for you. It suppose to be a good lens. I might pick one up for my A7R but not after some user review. I want a small traveling bag such as A7R plus ZE21 and 50A/50L.

You don't want to hear what others' have to say first? What if you get one and hate it?

It is the same design as 35A and seem lot of people happy with that lens. The slrgear test show more linear than most lens in the same focal length at f2 and upward. We can't expect canon AF to be 100% offset off center where the light bending kick in like the 50L case: http://slrgear.com/reviews/zproducts/sigma50f14a/ff/tloader.htm

Thank You, Shield, good info on the 24 to something zooms.

I've found a single body just doesn't work for me, the 5D3 looks like a fantastic body, would meet most of my needs...except one, it has no interchangeable focusing screens. Every body I've owned since my 1st 35mm SLR in 1978 has had them and I've used them...damn Canon

Additionally, my disability limits my physicality, having a C5 level spinal cord injury keeps me grounded for many reasons. Unlike when able-bodied, you won't find me out sailing, surfing, hiking, out in most wilderness areas seeking grand vistas. My wheels limit exploration to 'accessible' areas/venues and being a bit of a naturalist I'm not interested, don't want our
wild areas compromised at all; we unfortunate non walkers can view images to satisfy those wants IMHO.

With that said here we go...

I've not moved to FF digital just yet, the 6D seems to meet my needs/wants, but I'm in no hurry and won't be buying a new or used body for a while; 2nd qtr of 2015 at the earliest. I may find a replacement for 'our' G12, either another G or perhaps a mirriorless system like Fuji's X series.

As for lenses, I'm nearly there. I''d like the f4L zoom trinity, I normally shoot in the daytime and don't need fast glass; actually find it to heavy. So I'd like to add the 24-70 f4L IS to the 17-40L and 70-200 f4L IS that are in my kit. Those three lenses will cover most of my subjects quite well. Zooms, a macro and the 300 tele are my day kit; along with a 1.4x and extension tubes, a 580EXII and 430EXII

For low light events/subjects I'm good with non-L primes. Currently with the 28 f1.8, 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8, I could see replacing the wide end with one or two of Canon's new IS lenses. The 24 f2.8 and 35 f2 IS might just replace my 28, and if Canon update the 50 and 85 with IS I'd probably go for those as well.

When it comes to other subjects, action/sports and my close-up/macro, I'm nearly there already, sans the 180L and a longer telephoto like the 400 f5.6L; but I'm hoping Canon will add IS to an update.

I'm too spoiled to limit my selection to one body and six lenses, but if arm was twisted it would be...

5D Mark III, 35 f2 IS, 50 f1.4, 100 f2.8L IS, 300 f4LIS, 17-40L and 70-200 f4L and all the accessories I could get, but I'd cheat and add the 24-70 f4L IS and 400 f5.6L at least

Cheers,
Jerry

Hmmm, Ok a general purpose 7 item kit in order of importance from my slightly bigger kit:

5D3 - the all purpose camera
24-105 - the all purpose normal lens
100-400 - the all purpose long lens
24 TSE 2 - the multi purpose wide prime
100 L - the multi purpose medium prime
1.4x - more reach on two of the lenses above
G1X - light weight + underwater + backup

Maybe with G1X remove 24-105 and add 35 f2 IS, but, no. Might need 8.
35 f2 - nice FL on a nice fast lens - no real purpose

Edited to add the whys and wherefores.
