How much difference is there between the first edition of the Vibration Compensation and the newer model? I am looking at a used V1 and just wondered if I should pay the difference?

Plenty of info on this up in the NIkon forum.

General consensus seems to be that the VRI is a great bet on crop sensor. If you need sharpness across the frame on full frame, you may want to get the VRII.

I've used a friend's VRI a decent amount on my full frame and like it a lot. I'm tempted to pick up a used one, but I do shoot some landscapes, so I'm holding out for a VRII. The VR worked quite well from my experience - I don't honestly remember if people said there's an improvement in the VRII's VR - I don't think so.

If I were planning to use it for portraits exclusively (and similar), I would just get a VRI.

In Nikon speak.....The VR vs VR II is not about VR. It denotes the second release of a lens with the "70-200mm f2.8G ED VR" label.

Although VR may or may not have been updated at the same time.

if VR is the point of your thread, and perhaps 2.8 isn't an absolute requirement...Nikon claims the VR in the F4 version is even better than previous versions

The II's about a stop steadier...closer to 4, than the 3 of the VR
Also on an FX body the corners are nicer and less vignette. The II
takes all the Nikon TC's better both in IQ & AF speed. The knock
on the VR II is some focus breathing inside 30' at 200mm, but
the 70mm end is actually closer to 70 than the VR is (@73mm)
After having run a hundred thousand clicks thru each, my take
is the VR II is slightly sharper in the center but I like the bokeh
of the VR a tad better. Since I employ TC's I work the VR II for
close in BIF and rodeos. Naked, it's dynamite for Sr portraits.

I'm in the same boat as RunaKid. I have the 70-200mm 2.8 VR 1 and wonder if the VR2 is that much better -- I am mainly covering sports and news. I do use the 1.4X on occasion and have been generally happy with the combo. I have not been upset at all with the results of the VR1 but I did note the vignette mentioned above. Atlanta Dave

'monkey, as usual, hit the nail on the head. I did exhaustive research on the two before my first purchase. He's summed it up perfectly. FWIW, I got the first version.

The 70-200 2.8 VR1 is definitely my favorite lens and tack sharp. Never saw a reason to upgrade to the newer model. It worked great on my D800.

I owned the VR I and bought the VR 2 and 99% of the time there is no difference in performance or IQ. The VR II reduces problems with vignetting but I never had a problem with the VR I in this area. The VR II is sharper on the edges but in 99% of my pictures this makes no difference at all.

This is completely different than with the ancient Nikon 80-400mm VR I lens (with generation 1.0 VR) when compared to the VR II version (generation 3 VR) where there is a big difference in autofocus performance, VR performance, and image quality.

I have the 70-200 2.8 VRI II and have absolutely no complaints. Great lens. One thing to consider when deciding between the two, is the future resale value. I would research that, if it could be a factor.
