I'll suggest an 85/1.8 AF-D, you might find one for close to you budget. I had one, traded it, got it back, then was stupid enough to trade it again, thinking my current 85/1.4G would be so much better. It's better, but at 6x the cost it's not 6x better. Someday, I'll come full circle tto 85/1.8 AF-D again, I know it. To me 85 is the right length for casual portraits... If I'm standing a comfortable distance from a person, and pull the camera to my eye, bingo. I don't have to take a step backwards or forwards. The 85/1.8 is pretty compact and light, not much bigger than your 50G.
