Hi guys,

I have a major case of the famous GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) but not much money to spend ... What should I buy for 200$ ? If possible, the lens should takes good pictures, fun to shoot with and work on a FF camera, I don't care about the other things (MF or AF, Focal length, etc,). I already have the AFS 50 f1.8G in the same price range, what else should I get to scratch that itch ?

I'll suggest an 85/1.8 AF-D, you might find one for close to you budget. I had one, traded it, got it back, then was stupid enough to trade it again, thinking my current 85/1.4G would be so much better. It's better, but at 6x the cost it's not 6x better. Someday, I'll come full circle tto 85/1.8 AF-D again, I know it. To me 85 is the right length for casual portraits... If I'm standing a comfortable distance from a person, and pull the camera to my eye, bingo. I don't have to take a step backwards or forwards. The 85/1.8 is pretty compact and light, not much bigger than your 50G.

A Nikon 105 2.5 AI comes to mind - nice little lens, sharp, great build quality.

However, for $200 you can maybe go someplace fun for a weekend where you can use the stuff you have. I know GAS hits me the hardest after I've been home too long (and after a Taco Bell binge... Oh, maybe that's a different kind of GAS...)

Thanks guys, will search for both lenses, will see which one I can find first below the 200$ mark ... I just want a new toy !!!

@Steve, personally, I would prefer not having the kind of gas that comes from eating at Taco Bell but I'm sure my wife would much prefer that than the one that comes with new camera gear. Yup, she's a party pooper !

For $200 it sure is slim pickings. Even the manual focus Samyang 14MM is over 300 on evilbay. A weekend getaway may pay off far better.

Will do the weekend trip too but will split the 2 things in two different categories so that my wife doesn't link the two together. It will go something like this : Hi honey, here is my new lens ... Oh, by the way, didn't you want to go somewhere for a weekend getaway ? ... Good, very good ...

Better yet, say nothing about the lens, only the weekend. She m not notice the new lens. Sometimes I am SO glad I'm not married.

Unfortunately, she will notice the lens even if I don't say a word about it ... But hopefully I'll distract her enough with the trip that she'll forget the lens

Looking at the lenses you guys suggested to me, not easy to find them under 200$ !

Check eBay or the Canadian craigslist kijijiji or something like that. I'm quite certain the 105 2.5 is under $200

I prefer to buy on FM but I'll take a look at those sites to see if there's a deal I can't pass.

How abouts a macro lens of sorts? Unless you already have one. I love my $80 55 micro.

MF Macro's are so much fun and inexpensive. Some of my best finds have been cheap. For some reason my enjoyment of a new toy is amplified if it's less expensive.

My Nikon 60mm AF 2.8 Micro was $200, like new.
Panasonic LX3 with wide angle adapter (18mm FF) $100
Pentax *ist-DS with kit lens $100. Gave it to my father-in-law.

I'm looking for a 105 AI Micro too, there's one on Craigslist for $170 right now.

Unfortunately, it is harder to find good stuff at a good price on kijiji or craiglist in Montreal

Still looking ... Hopefully will find something soon at my pricepoint

It took a little digging, but am I correct assuming you have D7100 and D610 bodies, but only have the one 50mm f/1.8G lens? Or what else do you own as far as lenses?

If so, I'd sell the D7100 and apply that money plus your $200 to getting another quality lens or two (28mm f/1.8G, 85mm f/1.8G come to mind)

I had D7100 + 17-55 f2.8 + 35 f1.8, sold them to buy D610 + 50 f1.8, then sold the D610 to buy a D800E. So, now I have the D800E + 50 f1.8. Planning on buying a used 24-70 f2.8 or a 24-120 f4 but don't have the funds right now so, in the meantime, looking for something cheap and fun to play with until i can afford one of the 2 lenses (24-70 or 24-120).

I was also looking at the 28 1.8 because I shoot most of the time at a wider FL but it is a little more expensive than i can afford right now ... In a couple of months, i'll probably buy 1 of the 2 lenses mention above but I need something to get me through the next couple of months ....

Aaaaaaaaah .... GAS got the best of me !!! Bought a 24-70 f2.8. The price was pretty good for a new one so o jump on it.

I'm beginning to think that a war against GAS is impossible to win

You should put your gear in your profile. Shelve your impulse to buy a lens FMer's suggest. The lens you really need will become evident as you shoot this camera for awhile. I would put the money aside and start building a nest egg to buy the lens you really need, and make that purchase quality glass. Then post a more specific request for the best glass to meet specific shooting situations, i.e. landscapes, family, portrait, etc.
