I'm still torn between going with (2) 5D Mark III or (2) D800E when I buy new equipment this month.

Can you replace focus screen in a D800E? I was lookn to buy a 2 bodies and have a manual focusing screen put in one of the bodies so I could use Zeiss 15, 21 & 135 lenses

Thanks

Non-OEM focusing screens have effects on metering in unexpected ways. Katz Eye mentions the exact effect for each one; in the D700, spot metering is lost. The screens mentioned above are of Chinese manufacture (in of itself not necessarily a bad thing) but no info is provided as to materials and consequences on other camera functions (AF, metering). Katz Eye decided not to fabricate a screen for the D800 because of several technical constraints of the screen mount itself.

Caveat emptor.

Can you just leave focusing screen in D800E and use a Zeiss lens and focus manually?

What are you planning on shooting with these two D800E cameras?

There were some very good tips in this other post that you had here. Although it seems you forgot about it after the good information was provided?

I use manual focus with my Nikon tilt-shift lenses all the time for landscapes.

There would be no way I would stick that metal tool inside my D800E. And yes, I remove my OEM focus screen often for cleaning, but I use other tools, that will eliminate any chance of scratching.

All Zeiss lenses must be manually focused on a Nikon DSLRs.

When I had my D700 I replaced the stock screen with the split prism from KatzEye and it really didn't improve my ability to nail the focus with my fast lenses (50/1.2 or 135/2, etc.). With my D800 I've had far better success learning to use the focus confirmation dot and knowing for each lens when focus has been achieved relative to it's illumination characteristics. A pain, but that's the nature of a high MP DSLR and PDAF.

I await the day of a mirrorless D800 as my manual focus life will potentially be far far easier.

That wasn't my experience.
In good light, yes, I concur with you're observation. However, in failing light the split circle screen made a world of difference as the green dot was never reliable in low light with super fast glass & shallow DOF.

Not that it matters with those Zeiss lenses, but when using the tilt-shifts the green dot will stop functioning at a certain shift point. So, know the lens and know how to take advantage of live view.
