For myself, you want the light coming from only one side. If you did light from both sides like you are considering you would end up with no shadows and hence a very flat looking scene with no depth to it.

Hope that helps,

Jim

Thanks Jim. I thought that might be the case.

This is an amazing photo you have. Shooting at this spot in the dark of the night is a experience of lifetime ...

Hi Lonnie,

Wonderful shots. I would tone down the light on the tufas on the revised shot. The sky is much better in the second.

I really like both of these. Nice job of processing too.

I'm curious why the background looks so slanted. Did you shoot an image of the sky away from the tufas then lay the tufas over it without straightening the background?

I suspect it is a combination of a wide angle lens not level and some clouds.

This photo represents a single image. I purposely tilted/angled the tufa through Lightroom 5. The goal was to have the viewer follow the tufa up to the sky. If it looks odd, I can easily change it. Thanks for your question.

See my response to Don. The camera was level. Thanks for your help/remarks.

well then that's artistic license! I think what works at that level of detail depends on what you find pleasing.

I like the changes you've made. There is a background light coming from the middle of the frame that is a little distracting. I would clone that out.
