p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Superstition mountains at night

I took this image in the Superstition Mountains about 3 weeks ago while on vacation. Being from the midwest, I don't get a chance to get landscapes (or clean skies) like this often, so I was out shooting at night quite a bit .

This was one of my favorites from the set. Taken at about 3am with the moon rising. I used a 5D3 with a Samyang 14mm at f/2.8. It's a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600.

Hope you enjoy. C and C welcome.

Nice capture. Were you going for a star trails or frozen star look? Make sure to check your 600 or 500 rule depending on your camera.

Nice one.
I don't usually shoot with a strong moon out and I should. Good handling of the dynamic range.
Hope you post some other images from your trip

I have shot a lot around the Superstitions and the remark about the clean skies reminded me of just how important locations are for viewing stars. I went on a camping trip up in the White Mountains in eastern Arizona and the greater number of stars visible was extraordinary. Cool image as well.

hoy_D - I was going for the frozen star look. Normally when I'm pointed north, I can get away with a 30 second exposure (which is what this is) and not see them trail off. I was pointed south east for this one and the outliers were moving quicker.

Thanks David! I have one other one that I'm still fiddling with that I really like. I'll post it when I'm done.

Bryan - I hear you! This wasn't the cleanest sky , but getting up in elevation a bit helped. I was surprised how much I could see even with the bright moon.
