I waiting for the Tamron 150-600 (for Nikon) and was wanting to get a monopod to help support the weight. I'm looking for something sturdy, quick/easy for wildlife and birds. Any recommendations, especially for a monopod head? Thanks.

It's not all about the weight with long lenses, you need stability for the length too. I use a thick, solid CF monopod, the Benro C49T (ca. US$120) and a Nest NT-530H Gimbal (both the mono & the gimbal are superb) but you can get cheaper Chinese gimbals that work great (I've had two) however try to get one with a lock built-in otherwise they do occasionally loosen and you could end up having a nasty accident (or your 150-600 could) with the lens slipping out !

the less moving parts on the simplicity of a MP the better.

I second the Feisol - I use it with my 300 2.8 and have used it with a 400 2.8 with good results. Its light and sturdy, and I like the look of it better than the much more expensive Gitzo CF monopods.

I'm another happy Feisol CM-1471 Rapid user. It's strong, light and folds up to only 55 cm (21.7"). It handles my 500/4L IS with Extenders on a 1D-series body, no sweat. Fujifilm X cameras, too.

I like the RRS MH-01 monopod head, although there are more options now than when I bought mine. I posted some photos of the MH-01 and comments on how I use it, in a recent thread,

Add me to the list as a happy Feisol 1471 user and a happy RRS MH-01 head user for my long lenses. I also have used my Gimbal on the monopod but the RRS head is usually my goto option. I use it with my 600II and 2xTCIII so no worries about strength.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about a 600mm lens on this monopod.

I would go with Sirui P-324, you should be fine, great built quality.
I personally use Sirui P-424 for my 400/2.8 VR II

Thanks, this is all very helpful since I have little monopod experience. I do have a tripod/monopod combo, but it's too much fussing around to detach and I don't want to be fiddling and fighting with equipment. That MH-01 looks excellent Geoff.

Thanks again everyone.

I took at look at the Feisol mentioned above but don’t care for the twist locks. I have a Manfrotto (I think it’s a 680) which uses lever locks.

Just my $0.02

I am quite happy with Manfrotto 290 series (mt294a4). Good for 300mm + 1.7x (500mm effective).

I don't like monopod heads so I am using it as it is.

I use a manfrotto 685b neotec and a gimbal head with my Tamron. Heavy but fast to use.

If you get a MeFoto Globetrotter tripod, it can be converted into an incredebly strong monopod in seconds but also is a strong and equally light tripod.

Another vote for the Feisol. I use the new Kirk monopod head with it and love it, very smooth and locks down with a quick turn. Use it with a 300 and 500mm lens. The only nit I have regarding the setup is that I wish it's folded length was a little shorter. The monopod with head and lens is ~30". Often I need to get lower for wildlife shots and sometimes like to just sit on the ground and the setup is a little high. Gitzo make a 5 section monopod that collapses to ~16" that I'm eyeing.
