TDP: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art vs Zeiss Otus 55 f/1.4
Bryan at the-digital-picture.com just posted resolution crops for the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art.
There is much anticipation on how well the new Sigma 50mm will compare to the superb Otus 55mm.
  1. Here is the resolution comparison with the Otus 50mm f/1.4

Here is the comparison with Canon 50mm lenses:
  1. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens
  2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens

The new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Lens will hit the shelves for $949 in late April.

Pre-order it from B&H Photo for $949

Not bad for a lens that costs a fraction and has autofocus. Looking forward to Canon's update of the 50/1.2 and 50/1.4.

I pre-ordered the Sigma.
It is going to be a nice lens, especially for low light use, and people pics.

After checking out the Sigma vs the Canons (they're very soft aren't they!) I had a look at the Sigma 85/1.4 That also looks like a pretty good lens for my shipping list!

Looks mighty impressive based on TDP shots, sharper @ f1.4 & f2 than canon 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 35 f2IS, 135 f2 and sigma 50 1.4 by far. Only compareable lens in similar price range is sigma 35 f1.4 art, though the Super 50 is sharper than 35 midframe & edges.

Hmm to upgrade the current less frequently used sigma 50 1.4 is the question...

Also important is that unlike it's predecessor, it's just about as sharp as the 50/1.4 USM at f/8-f/11 .

Looks like Siggy catches up to Big Z at 2.8 and higher. Not sure the 3K spread is worth the small difference in a couple of f stops.

I think it would be for plenty of people if the Zeiss had world-class AF; but without AF, the real applications of shooting the Otus at wider apertures remain fairly limited. If the 50 Art 'Sigmotus' can get the shot at f/1.4-f/2, it will be quite a bit more useful for the vast majority of photographers.

That would be great, although I am more eager for a 135 1.8 since the current Sigma 85 1.4 is very good

It is hilariously not even close to the Otus in terms of distortion, contrast, sharpness, or aberration control from wide open down to f/2 and it catches up quickly after that. Definitely a better lens at f/2 than the 50MP though (which is saying something). It absolutely destroys what we already knew were canons absolutely pathetic offerings at 50mm.

I just hope this thing can focus well. If it can, definitely buying one. A little bummed there aren't some "weather sealing" gaskets on it though.

Canon's offerings are ancient, outside of the 50L- and Nikon's offerings, while being better built and having better handling, aren't optically superior either. All except the 50L/58G are cheaper than this Sigma, and those lenses have different purposes.

This lens is really in an entirely different class- it's a high-performance 50 that's meant to be actually used close to wide-open in a broad range of shooting conditions on a regular basis. It's not going to have the rendering of the 50L or the 58G, nor is it going to be light and cheap like other 50's.

Wish this had been an 85. Hoping we see that soon from them soon. If they follow suit with a 24 and 135, I can pretty much kiss my Canon glass goodbye.

I hope they do the 85 next, though it needs far less work on the optics and only a little tuning for the AF. The 135L should only really be updated if they make a 1:2 focusing OS version .

To sell or not to sell my 50 1.2, that's the questions.

How much do you use 50mm? Is that because of the strengths of the 50L, or it's weaknesses, or both?

Wow. So much to say.

At first, after only viewing the Sigma vs Zeiss, I was going to say that the Zeiss is clearly better through at least f4 (that's as far as I looked). I was going to say that I was frankly disappointed. But I decided to look at the other comparisons before I posted.

Holy crap, it simply puts the 50L to shame, by a large margin. If you leave the Sigma at f/1.4, it still remains sharper than the 50L until about f/5.6, which is astounding.

Comparing the 50L to the 50 1.4 was interesting too. The 1.4 seems to have better sharpness in the corners than the 50L. The 1.4 does seem to exhibit more chromatic aberrations however. Overall though, I would find it hard to justify the L when the 1.4 is pretty close.

Having said all that, many of these differences are much less apparent in everyday shooting.
