Well, I shoot real estate photography and a lot of it. I am so paranoid about something happening that would shut me down. I use the D800, but have the Df as a back up if needed. I have a 24-70, but 35mm is about as far as I can push an interior image. I try to stay somewhere between 17 and 24. The 14-24 is a fantastic lens, but if anything happens to it, I am screwed until it comes back from Nikon repair. A $2000 investment is more than I want to pay for a backup lens.

Hold off on purchasing a backup lens. Why not put some money in savings, and if something happens to your 14-24/2.8, then buy a replacement lens and have it shipped overnight or 2-day?
BTW...the 18-35 AF-S is a fine lens, especially considering the price (I own it in addition to the 14-24/2.8), but it does have a lot of barrel distortion at 18mm.
