Long story short: I have an old model (with metal ribs) Westcott 86" shoot through umbrella (model 4630). It has a hollow 1/2 inch diameter main shaft that will not fit any umbrella holder I can find. Inside diameter of the main shaft is about 3/8 inch.

I tried reaching out to Westcott, but apparently they don't like me... no response. :-(

I am pretty sure there is some kind of insert/center shaft that is missing. Any thoughts/suggestions/advice/solutions would be most welcome, since I cannot use the umbrella as is.

Thanks!
Paul

Are you sure it's not a Buff PLM? They have a 7mm shaft that connects to the main shaft. Can you post a photo of the umbrellas main shaft?

I also have a Buff PLM, it is different. The Buff has a keyway so it cannot rotate, and a screw to lock everything in place. My Buff has the center mount adapter that locks onto my White Lightning modifier mount (whatever technical term for that is, it escapes me at the moment). It also came with a plain shaft so it could be mounted to any umbrella mount , but that part is not keyed. I believe that is the same shaft you are referring to...

This umbrella has no markings, so I suppose it could be some other brand, but it came to me in a plastic bag with a barcoded tag that says: Westcott 86 inch Optical White umbrella; sz: 4630; 28703.01 So I assume that is what it is.

I will try to get a photo up when I have more time...

Paul

Hey Paul.....what you may try is a maybe a super clamp..or a double one like Impact's CC-128

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838883-REG/impact_cc_128_double_super_clamp.html

Maybe this one would work better as it offers the place to put the shaft..then attach to stand with separate controls

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/124734-REG/Avenger_D230_Super_Clamp_Grip_Head.html

If just a single super clamp or two would work...I could bring over if you need to shoot tonight!

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the links. I was hoping for something less "fiddly" and I still believe there once was a center shaft. I am hoping to find out how it is supposed to be, but it looks like I will end up improvising...

No shoots scheduled with that umbrella until I figure it out. :-)

Cheers,
Paul
