This species Cassida viridis normally lives on my Lemon Balm but was on Rhubarb leaves in today's sunshine. While still couples they kept moving around (the female walking) in all directions. A third beetle watched from a little way off. Getting the heads showing is tricky.

EP-2, Kiron 105mm f11 ISO 400, sunlight, hand-held.

Thanks. I have made numerous attempts to get good shots of these in recent years, usually with many more beetles to choose from. These are the best so far but there is room for improvement.

I think a handheld diffuser to block out some of the sun would help with some of the harshness. My preference is for the last shot where the lighting is a little more even.

Thanks, Paul. I agree with the principle. These might be one of the subjects where this is a practical proposition, being in relatively fixed locations, near ground level. Also, I have yet to calibrate for fill flash, rather than full flash.

Thanks. I have looked for them again, in wet weather, to try my flash and softbox on them but they had more sense than I did and stayed under cover. No worries, as they have a long season.

Some shots with full, diffused flash (softbox) are here:
