p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Going light weight - ie 70-200/f/4 IS?

Hey folks, I've got a question for fellow Canon wedding shooters with the 70-200/4 IS: How do you find it compared to the original 2.8, particularly with respect to weight, IS performance, and suitability for ceremonies? I've got an original 2.8IS, and by the reception my back is killing me after carrying it around for the ceremony and formals. I'm hoping that if I go to the f/4 IS I won't give up performance since the IS is a stop better than the original 2.8IS. Do I need to supplement with a 135/2 for dark churches? I rarely shoot the 2.8 wide open unless I have to in dark churches.

So, is it a pipe dream or can I cut weight in half without giving up much, if anything?

Have you thought about the 200L 2.8? It's $800 new, and half the weight of the 70-200 2.8.

Just sold my 70-200L 2.8 and my new 200L 2.8 comes today! So excited to use that lens! I think I'm going to love it!

Our associate tried the nikon 70-200 f4 lens this year and we were very impressed with the performance. I think people overstate the DOF difference between 2.8 and f4, you save a lot of weight by opting for the f4 when possible, and the 135 as backup/faster option sounds like a great kit.

I find that I really need IS on the longer end, particularly in dark churches. I am not as steady as I used to be, and I try to keep ISO as low as possible so I'll go to 1/80 @2.8 before going to ISO over 3200

I had a 135L I loved using for weddings. Sold it to fund a 70-2002.8vII that I am also happy with. But MAN IS IT HEAVY!

I used to own the f4 IS. Amazing lens, but I would have trouble using an f4 lens in a church.

Another option to consider is the sigma 150 2.8 macro OS

I borrowed Nikon's 70-200 f4 for a recent wedding and used it in church and outdoors... and I was quite pleased with it and it's noticeably lighter. I've seriously considered selling my 2.8 and getting the 4.0 because the results with it were great... and the difference between 2.8 and 4.0 is not much in the way it looks, other than both people being more in focus at f/4 whereas sometimes one is soft at 2.8...

The only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger is that the resale values on Nikon stuff seemed to drop a while back because of rebates and they never went back up.

we are switching to sony and my wife will be getting a 70-200f4 and I would be willing to bet that 99% of clients could care less whether you are at f4 or 2.8. If you want lightweight then do it. WIth the ultra high ISOs these days f4 is fine.

You should report back your feelings about the 200 once you've used it. I used to use it and found it sharper and more contrasty wide open than the 135L!
