Tim,

Here's the config that I use for my kids Lacrosse game using D7000.

Set to Manual mode
Picture quality to Raw
White balance to Auto
Shutter to 1/2000 (change the shutter depending on the amount of light -- use the built in light meter. I try not to go below 1/1000 due to the fast moving action.)
Aperture to widest open your lens can support
ISO to 100
Focus mode to Continuous
Focus point to single (I usually set it in the middle)

Once I have it all setup, I save the config to user config U1. That way, anytime I'm ready to shoot kids sport, just turn the mode dial to U1 and you are all set.

If you are just starting out, it may be easier to set the camera to either Aperture priority (A) or Shutter priority (S). Use Aperture priority if you want to control Depth of Field. Use Shutter priority if you want to stop motion. Once you get comfortable, I recommend shooting in manual.

Best thing to do is experiment.

Enjoy the camera. It's a great body for sports.
