p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 150-600mm & Canon 7D BiF (2nd copy)

I have not seen many BiF shots with the New Tami and Canon 7D. I am starting this new thread... Please share your thoughts

As I got my second copy recently and mostly been using the lens with 5D3. Today light was a little better and I decided to try the 7D.

By no means this is comparable with the 400 5.6 prime but once it gets the subject it stays on the subject. I shot 20 frames and 17 are in focus and 3 - I ll gave 50-50 to human error and lens error.

All these were shot at 600mm (probably the softest spot). Not happy with sharpness but the AI-Servo performance at 600mm (effec 960mm) was not bad.

Only posting 4 frames here but I can post all if you are interested. 50-60% crops.

Nice shots. After all the ruckus about the Tami and 7D AI Servo, it looks like the problem is resolved. Are you happy?

So, you consider the EF 400 faster focus, but how would you compare it to the 100-400?

Nice job. Those look good, especially the first one that's stopped down. If this lens can shoot moving targets at 600mm and f7.1 then it's one heck of a bargain for sure.

Focus is slower than the 400 5.6 with or without the 1.4x tele.

I am yet to try the focusing with faster moving birds in good light. Can comment only when I get a chance. Will share the results but its better than the last copy for sure.

Congragulations ox0312. This is the first set of honest to goodness sequential shots I've seen on the web to date. These are really nice shots and I'm glad the second time around worked out for you. I just got mine back from Tamron after being re-built and I haven't really had a chance to try it out on sequential shots of BIF yet but it did stay in focus on cars on the freeway. I' love this lens and it's a keeper for me for sure.

Auto-Focus on 7-D, with my copy was dreadful, weather in IA Servo or One Shot.

Sent it back to Adorama

Maybe I'll try another copy in the future

Congragulations ox0312. This is the first set of honest to

Thanks!!

I spent some more time with the Lens and 7D in the last few day. Not many flying birds around but still enough to test new Tami and 7D.

My take away from the exercise - just for BiF shots

1. This is by no means a replacement of 400mm 5.6 lens for BiF shots but its not bad for situations when carrying a 2nd lens is not an option
2. I kept the shutter speed 1/3rd-1/2 stop faster compared to 400 5.6. e.g. if you use 1/1600 with 400 prime - use 1/2000 or higher with this lens
3. Keep the VC = OFF at all time for BiF shots. There is a "wobble" when lens engage the VC and it was putting the subject off in most of the shots. VC = OFF and much better results.
4. 500mm at F8 is your best bet with this lens (in terms of sharpness) - I manually set it as much as possible.

For static bird shots (inside the woods etc.)... I am now preferring this lens over 400mm most of the time

Posting a few BiF shots here with some fast flying birds

ex0312, those appear to be single shots. Can you post multiple sequential shots in AI servo? I am still skeptical, considering how Tamron has handled the situation.

Did you use a radar gun to clock the falcon's speed as 200MPH

First four shots are sequential

In the later post I only post one out of the sequence as there are so many. I ll try to post 4 pics from the sequence if I still have those (means not deleted)

And the record speed was during at dive with wings folded in, from an altitude of 12,000 feet. Hardly the same as flying horizontally at a few hundred feet.

Yes, for dive it goes over 200+

but I was on top of a cliff (600-700ft high) and plus a few hundred feet is close to 1000ft

He was going down towards the nest which was down the cliff.
