how does each work for you alone?
as a series?
which work as square crops?

Thanks
Scott

Over analyzed thoughts:

#1 & #4 - the standpipe leads the eye out of the frame.

#2, the curve accelerates the eye to the right, then down to the standpipe and off frame.

#3, most pleasing to me visually - I find the curve less influential, perhaps resulting from lower contrast, and vision directed from the right downward, then back along lower diagonal upward - cycling around the image. Perhaps some cropped from the top would help balance better?

Regards,

Bob

I agree with Bob - clone out that pipe as is distracts. I think that the off-balancing would play out better if there wasn't anything to draw attention in the negative space.

#1 is my favorite if it were angled more vertically.

As shot, #3 has my vote.

Interesting angles Scott!

I think the black negative space is fine, but that pipe running through the middle of it without any detail on the other side is pretty distracting for me.

#3 and #4 get my vote for best as is.

Alternate crops of 2-4. Did not attempt consistent aspect ratio.

My vote goes to the second shot in the original set. Somehow the shadows on the building make it more interesting for me and #2 has the most appealing shadows. I looked at the cropped version a couple of times but I still like the square crop. They don't do much for me as a series. If these were in a gallery I would spend time at the one I liked (2nd one) and probably not step back to look at them together.
Nice find and capture.

thanks guys
my conclusions from the feedback so far
1. Standpipe in the shadows needs to be cloned or burned out. Makes sense to me.
2. No clear favorite but also no clear strong image either. One of the series is enough
3. Square crop is probably fine.

Other thoughts?

I like the use of negative space , the square frame and the angled view. Perhaps a compositional compromise between numbers three and four?
