Local camera store said you can still use current focusing screen that comes with D800/D800e without having to switch to a manual focus screen when using manual focus lens. Any truth to this?

Thanks

Yes, most people probably use the original focusing screen with their MF glass and don't have issues. Magnified live view focusing is still recommended for best critical focus no matter what brand and type of lens is used, AF or MF.

Yes, when critical focus is needed I use live view. When I use my 21mm f/2.8 and 100mm f/2.0, I don't trust the green dot that much it seems like there are enough play within the green dot. I never AF fine tune it.

I use a Zeiss 135 mm 2.0 on my D800E. It's a wonderful lens with perfect results.

I did the following: For my area of work (Beauty, Lingerie, Nude -- see www.stanROX.com) I use no live view. Instead, I know my lens is sharpest JUST when going into focus as displayed by the focus indicator. To achieve maximum sharpess, I remind about that and - bing! There it goes.

Normally, I should do a focus adjust to make sure the lens is in focus when the focus indicator is "on point". But for me, it's easier that way.

Great tips, I will test it out to find the sharpest point with my lens.

I prefer to manual focus with my 200mm macroD and I have to manual focus with the 50mm 1.2. I don't seem to have too much of a problem with focus issues on my D800e.

The D800 doesn't have any alternative focus screens.

I only use manual focus with static subjects or for lenses 20mm or wider. For anything involving people I use an AF lens and the camera set to AF-C; for quality people photography it's important to shoot based on pose, gesture, facial expression, or other "moments", not based on when it happens to be in focus. With AF-C the camera keeps it in focus allowing the photographer to pay attention to the subject. This makes for better photographers and better photographs.

D800/E, Zeiss 21/25/28/35/50/100:
I don't like magnified live view, so I usually do critical focus by eye. With the right conditions---no wind, steady posture, etc---I've gotten perfect focus with the optical finder. Perfect as in the ZF 35/2 at about 14" focus distance looking square at the ground in the sandy Arizona desert with the individual grains of sand sharp on a 14x21" FF print.
If you have to operate fast, like fast-moving PJ-type coverage, there is going to be a little---or a lot---more hit and miss with MF.
