p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sleeping Dragon

Here is a set of images from several separate visits to my favorite "SW location".

I've been there for sunrise and sunset, and in the dark, and even if the place seems very quiet, it emanates a sense of danger and mystery. Maybe there is a dragon sleeping somewhere in a far corner between rocks, or maybe it has been asleep for so long that turned into rock itself ?

It was my artist friend who first used this dragon metaphor:

Looks like dragon, doesn't it?

Shifts in light constantly create new visions. One can just sit on a rim, and take pictures of this magic all day long, and never repeat himself:

That's almost the same location where Mark took his picture from:

But beware, finding roads is hard, especially in the dark... not sure I will ever find this spot again:

None of these pictures are new, and some already appeared on this forum about a year ago, but thoughts and discussion are welcome.

Sasha.

I think you did a nice job with these, not overcooked or unnatural looking. Coalmine Canyon has been a favorite of mine (and many others) for some time, although it seems harder to see as much of it these days compared to my first visit. Some of the roads I once used now have gates.

A really beautiful set, Sasha.
You did an especially fine job of incorporating your friend into the picture.
It's not just a good shot of your friend painting- it's a good shot overall.

Stan, thank you!
When did you visit it for the first time?

Thank you, Charlie.
I like this shot, too. And what's important - my friend likes it

Hi Sasha,

The light in #3 is lovely, but I think there's too much weight on the right. I'd love to see a 4x5 crop coming up to the left edge of the foreground bush.

Enjoyed this nice series and quite a difference between the color of the rocks in yours.

Really nice! Lovely spot, hope to visit it someday. Nice pp and compositions. Only suggestion (minor) would be to try to show a little more of the painting in the first shot. You know - "art mirrors life" to show the difference between the painter and the photographer. Philosophical. Might be an idea for next time Thanks.

Tim, thank you for the critique. I don't think #3 will benefit from the crop. The lovely structure in the center will become partial, and a sunny spot on a rock that currently adds interest, will get to the very edge of the frame.

Sasha.

Don, thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Rocks vary in color depending on location, there are also all-white clay, and black coal segments. It is often compared to Bryce, but to me, it seems even more sophisticated and diverse.

Waldo, glad you liked it.
As about "art mirrors life" - I have a shot where you can see exactly the same spot both painted and photographed, but I think by posting it I will voilate my friend's copyright, because it shows her picture not partially, as on #1, but head-on.

Sasha.
