I shoot (or used to shoot) with both bodies side-by side I just sold the D600 with an intent to replace with D800E but I'm starting to miss it already. Shot an event this weekend with only the D4 and 28 1.8G and realized how important those extra pixels were. I had to do lots of creative cropping and the D4 was clearly hurtin for some pixels. I did get ALL the action shots though so that was a wash, but I normally shoot with both D4 and D600 and they complement each other well.
The D600's IQ is pretty identical to the D4 and D800's. The build, handling, and features are what separates these bodies apart.
There are 3 things that bugged me (personal thing) about having a D4 and D600 together:
1. They use different batteries - this means you need two separate chargers when you're out on the field or when travelling. I hated that. The en-el18 charger is huge!
2. The D600 uses SD cards only. The D4 uses XQD and CF. This means THREE different sets of cards and card readers. Whereas if I have a D800 as 2nd body, I can carry CF only and call it a day. Think about it.
3. The D600 has a different layout than the D4. Changing modes is different and it can take some time to get used to. The D600 has a slip-on eyepiece that can sometimes get dislodged when you're in the heat of the action.
Otherwise, the D600 is a very nice second body to the D4, if you can live with those "issues" (I know, first world problems right?).
