p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Italy trip: what lenses to take?

I'm heading to Italy in June for vacation. I'm upgrading to a 70D. What lens should I take? I have the 17-85mm and am thinking of getting the 70-200 F4L IS USM. I have the more compact 70-300 4.5-5.6 DO IS USM but don't find it quite sharp enough.

Don't want to carry too much gear. I like to shoot mostly landscape, architecture, sometimes people.

Would love some thoughts?

Thanks!

I only took a 17-55 to Italy and my single regret was not having a 10-22.

take the 17-85 and if you can, buy the 70-200 F4 IS its a super sharp lens.

I like the 10-22mm idea. I'll check it out. Thanks lhryshko.

I think a UWA lens is essential when in Europe. I don't know if you would need a telephoto lens, to be honest. Maybe a fast prime when you're indoors and flash photography is not permitted.

Something wide, like the excellent 10-22, for inner city and an occasional landscape; something in between that'll do available light or has IS with a FF equivalent of around 50mm (sorry, haven't shot APS-C in ages, someone will come up with a good option but for FF I'd take something like a 35/1.4 or 50/1.4) for dark cathedrals and small depth-of-field photography; and something tele, either a zoom (70-200 4 IS is my go-to lens for travel) or a long prime, for compressed city- and landscapes. Especially the last works wonders during sunset in Rome when on an elevated place: those church domes compressed together in golden light is wonderful.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I will definitely look into both the 10-22mm and perhaps a fast prime in the 35mm range.

On trips, I just bring what my P/S will not do... wide and shallow DOF

Recent trip to Italy: 17-40 and 135L on FF body.

Wasn't one situation that I felt I needed anything else.

HTH and have a GREAT time

I'll suggest wide too. Either the already mentioned Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16 f/2.8. They are both excellent, you can't go wrong with any of them.

I'll postpone the 70-200 for now.

DSLR - 17-85 - 70-200 - are large and heavy!

Take a look at the Sony Nex system - don't have to make a full purchase - maybe purchase a body and rent the lenses or combination of such.

The Sony Nex 6 or better yet the Nex a6000 with a Zeiss 16-70/4 (24-105mm) and a 24/1.8 - both with image stability. Add the Zeiss 12/2.8 or Sony 10-18 OOS for Cityscape / Architecture & interiors. Liberate yourself from the heavy DSLR & the IQ will surpass the Canon rig at the same time.

The sigma 18-35 1.8 is perfect for just about everthing you could think of, unless your main goal is landscape photos becasue then the 10-22 is the best lens for the job.

You want the lens attached to the G1X.
