Well it looks like I am not the only one to have had a mishap with my gear. My first though, after many years, so maybe I'm not too unlucky.

Thanks for the offer Rod. I'll try to time it so that I won't have anything going for the week it'll be gone. Nice of you to offer though. Good to hear from you. It's been a while. I hope all is going well for you and Mary.

Oh please, Dan, give me a break......I usually associate that cliché with peddlers of junk gears and photographers-posers.

Kathy, so sorry to hear about your mishap. For your own peace of mind etc. it is best to get Canon to restore it back to "as new" condition which I do not think it should be very expensive.

Certain tilt would make this a fine TS-E lens without the shift. Shooting at f2.8 and everything would be in focus might be cool.

I once dissected the Zoom ring on my 100-400mm and all the bearings fell out. When I sent the lens in, they actually gave me another lens and it was sharper!

I think just bite the bullet and send it in. I was happy when I got mine back better than new.

Quite. Were i a photojournalist specialising in warzones then yes, a few scratches and the odd bullet hole would be marks of honour. However, as a fine weather amateur photog such damage just makes me look clumsy.

There is a great range of photographers and photographic conditions between those two extremes.

Even some pros who photograph only in fair weather have to photograph so frequently and at such a fast pace that their equipment become worn and even slightly dented even though they are completely professional and take excellent care of of it.

It it too easy to assume that a pristine camera is a shelf queen, just like it is too easy to assume that a few scratches and a dent or two means the photographer is careless and clumsy.

Peter, thanks for the kind words, I am going to send it in. Since it is working I'll do it at a time when I know I won't be missing it. Honestly, on top of wanting to ensure there is no damage, I don't want to look at the mark I caused and remember I did it every time I pick it up. I'd rather just pay the 200 bucks or whatever, and have it back and know I can depend on it still. I've had a lens accidently get released once before but I was over a table plus I caught it. This time it was a total surprise.

15bit, Monito, I see people put their lenses away with no end caps, or place them touching each other in their bags etc. but I can't do it. To me I invested money in them and yes, I am going to use them and things do happen, but I keep them as closely as possible to the condition I got them in. I want them to work properly for me and if and when I want to sell one I want as much of my investment back as possible.

You may just barely come out ahead on a big repair if you buy into CPS gold (assuming you have enough equipment, it sounds like you do). Free clean and checks will save you money right off the bat and then a 30% discount on the repair. I actually logged in tonight to post about my own 70-200 mkII woes (IS started freaking out and jumping + weird IS initiation sound + bearings on the tripod collar aren't smooth).

Maybe we can have a competition to see who ends up paying more? I suspect you will only have to have the rear portion of the barrel replaced with some lens realignment which may be much less than an IS repair + whatever is going on with the tripod collar.

Best of luck though

Thanks kezeka.

I've actually been a CPS Gold member for several years. I qualify for the highest one as well but don't think I need it. The Gold level takes care of me quite well.

The GOOD news is I finally called my agent, after almost deciding not to even bother, thinking I had a deductable like on our house and automobiles. I actually have ZERO deductable and she said since it's on a separate policy it won't affect anything at all to put in the claim. So I won't be out anything on getting it repaired. It should be as good as new when I get it done.

Thanks again to all for the information shared and kind thoughts. I'll post back after it's sent and repaired. I'll hopefully be able to send it in next week.

On my 5DII that happened quite a few times with my 28-300 L. Fortunately I always caught it as it came off. I have no idea how it happened as it only happened with that lens on that body. Be careful in the future, that combo could have the same problem again. Regards, Herb

Yzoockof, I am thinking seriously about having it get a checkup. Probably the costliest lens to repair I have (on the Canon repair scale) except for the 300 2.8.
If I had to have an accident with one, I wish it had been a smaller, cheaper one.
I can't see much reason to sell it because I would just have to turn around and buy another one. It's on my camera very often.

Emilysun, No, I bought it about 3 or 4 years ago. But warranty wouldn't cover this paint chipping. It hit so hard that I was amazed
