Does anyone here have the Voigtlander close focus adapter. I put it on the A7 body and then affix the lens but the camera tells me the lens isn't attached properly. It also displays the aperture as 0.0.

M-mount adapters (and most other adapters) don't have electrical contacts, so no aperture information is sent to the camera. If this is the first time you've used an alt lens on your A7, you need to set the Release Without Lens setting in the menus to on.

My 21/4 A7 shots were so poor I did not keep them but here it is at f/11

on the M9

one more

There is a reason most M digital users upgrade from this lens. On the M9 it's only "usable".

The 35/2.5 is also unusable on the A7s, but very good on the M9.

the CV 35/1.4 is usable on both A7s, but you have to go to F/8 for corners. I find it very good on the M9.

I wish the 21/4 was better on digital as the size is fantastic. Edge performance at infinity is not close to nFD 20/2.8. The centers, however may be better, they are great at 5.6.

It's a lens for film--that's the majority viewpoint if you search RFF.

There may be copy variation, but take one look at the lens and you know the A7, with a 1.75mm filter stack, is not going to like that rear element for edges.

The zm18 has a much more friendly design for digital, and gives excellent performance on the M9, but it's terrible on the R and not as good as the Canon on the 7, though again, the centers are great.

What's "usable"? It must be capable (edges at least, corners prefered) of a simple landscape shot before diffraction takes the bite away: by f/11 anyway. I don't think that is too anal.

alwang, thanks for the info. I believe I did activate that setting, but apart from the aperture registering f0.0 all the time, when I press certain buttons, I get the message: "please attach the lens properly" or something to that effect. Is that normal?

uhoh7, the first image looks totally out of focus. The second one seems okay.

Second is a better example, note left edge.

But nico tells me he tried four CV21s and only the last was acceptable, and he does have some very smart shots in the leica thread with it.

nicos shots

You need f/8 on a perfect copy to do that on a leica M digital is what I'm hearing. So the 1600 tariff to upgrade to a SEM 21 basically gives you something sharper already at f/3.4... on the M9
here it is at 5.6:

That gorgeous lens, probably the best 21 ever made, is also worthless on the Sonys.

@paul
with respect, that's not close to what the lens is capable of, outside the central frame. It's much better on the A7:

but the 225USD canon still just kills it on the edges.

here is the zm18 on the M9:

I think if one already owns the zm18, certainly you can make some nice shots with it on the sonys. Serious landscapes, however are out of the question---to my great regret as I had very high hopes for that lens.

I'm sure zeiss will come up with something.

yeah, your copy was definitely decentered, and possibly miscalibrated (from the shots posted).

uhoh, what lens was used in that second image?

and so, what 21-28mm would you guys suggest for the a7? I don't really care about vignetting; I spent a long time in PP anyway. It's the unfixable stuff like smearing that I want to avoid. I'd really like something that can render like the second image there.

Second is the zm18 on a7 at f/11 ish.

Trouble is edges no where near as crisp as center, but it's usable. Canon nFD 20/2.8 I feel is best option till a native UWA is released.

It handles as well as the zm18 really, but protrudes a bit more. Much faster and a quarter the price.

Fred has one now too. Easy to get at keh.

Sebboh, you hate UWAs, remember?

Here is same house sem21 on m9, for fun:

I don't think this one is decentered

indeed, that's the reason i'm only considering one that i wouldn't notice carrying. the OM 21/3.5 is too big for me to consider. the thought of wasting shelf space with the fd 20/2.8 is unthinkable.

Perhaps there is some hope for using the 21mm or 25mm Color Skopars on the Sony A7s using front end filters:
