Like all hoodoos, these formed because of the resistant "capstone" rocks that protect the softer rock directly beneath them.
Everything else erodes away and the hoodoos are left.
Because the American southwest is mostly layered sandstones (softer) and limestones (harder), hoodoos are not rare. But they are always different and always fascinating.
