I'm a relatively new member here and read (and learn!) an awful lot more than I write. My other hobby is woodworking, thought that is taking a back seat for a while with a new child and upcoming move. I frequent a woodworking forum and I am taking this thread idea from there. This is a place to gloat and show off any great deals you managed to find on second hand equipment. Think Craig's List, eBay (if there are still any deals to be had on eBay with their now outrageous fees), items purchased on the forum here, garage sales, estate sales, flea markets, local classifieds, swap meets--or where ever else you might acquire some second hand gear.

What has anyone scored recently.

Here's the thread that I am taking inspiration from:

I've had great success buying and selling on FM. I will say, however, that the photographers on this forum are a little nervous about doing business with someone that has only a few posts (less than 50). Maybe someone can expand on this!

I have never picked up any gear that wasn't exactly as described.

I bought my Nikon 80-200 AF-D, 2 ring lens, with case, hood, etc via Craigslist. We met up at a local ice cream stand and made a cash deal. It was significantly less that what I'd expect to pay on FM or ebay.

I bought my D300 via Craigslist as well. A lady who shoots kid's school pictures gave me a good deal on it. The shutter count is like 235000 and the rubber is starting to peal, but it's a great "beater" for me, and a bit of an upgrade from my D200. Cash deal in a parking lot.

I haven't gotten much camera gear at yard sales, but I am a big fan of yard sales in general.

Bought a 18-55 DX + 10.5/2.8 FishEye DX + AF 180/2.8 FX for $950 and sold them half a year later for $1550 ($600 profit).

Best deal I've gotten so far was from a local Kijiji seller. Cash deal, met at his house.

5k for:
D800 LNIB
70-200/2.8 VR II LNIB
24-70/2.8 Tamron LNIB
14-24/2.8 LNIB
+ some accessories

Pretty happy with that haul!

I play with Nikon MF lenses which are great deals simply because most folks don't wish to be troubled with turning the focusing ring. I can talk about great deals but in truth the market is so depressed for these lenses that they aren't really so extraordinary. But as an example, for $79 I bought a lens that when it came out in 1977 cost seven hundred dollars. I did the math and today that lens would cost a bit more than its replacement, the 70-200 f/2.8 VR2. The lens, an 80-200 f/4.5 AI was and still is an extraordinary lens that I love shooting with. I shot this with it yesterday...

Wide open with a PK-13 extension tube.

The number of first rate professional Nikkor lenses I've bought for less than a hundred bucks is remarkable. For someone on a budget who isn't shooting sports or kids running around the backyard, there are some GREAT deals to be had. The 135 f/2.8 Q,C, AI I bought last week for $65 will arrive tomorrow... And today I bought a like new classic, the 55 f/1.2 S.C. AI for much less than a new 50 f/1.4G. There are still deals to be had...

I put a WTB ad up on craigslist when I was looking for a D700 in October of 2012. For $1500, I got a Kata 3N1 bag in great condition, D700 with 12K clicks, MB10 grip (OEM Nikon), 3 Nikon batteries, Nikon MC-36 remote and a few 4GB CF cards.

I sold the grip, remote and bag for $300. So $1200 for the camera. I sold the camera for $1500 last summer and picked up a D600 for $1300 with 3100 clicks a few months ago

As for the old lenses, I will need to some research. Im very picky. I doubt I will find something sharper than a Samyang 14mm for the price ($250)

Which means Dustin that when you want to shoot 14mm you're in good shape... that only leaves 16 to 800 to cover... There are some gems all along the way, though some are more expensive than others...

Now, let's hear the Craigslist horror stories... BTW, stolen gear is always cheaper than gear sold by its owner.

CGrindahl, your Nikon MF thread is actually what made me think a topic like this might thrive here. I don't consider myself a collector of tools and certainly not of camera equipment, but I enjoy the pursuit of a deal and breathing new life into something old but of good quality.

My latest CL conquest was a Manfrotto Monopod 681B with Manfrotto 3229 head for $55 in a Pita Pit parking lot.

No doubt the hunt for a good deal motivates many of the folks participating in the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread. Over the years there have been some great finds. We had one fellow who visited camera sales in Pennsylvania that he'd buy and pass along to the rest of us. Lenses have been found in garage sales, and definitely through craigslist. I drove thirty miles one time and met a fellow who listed some lenses on craigslist. We met at a branch of my bank so I didn't have to carry cash. We sat in the waiting area as I poured over the five gorgeous lenses he had for sale. I bought three of them, went to the teller and cashed a check to cover the cost. They weren't cheap lenses but I definitely got a good deal on some mint quality Nikon glass. I was happy.

Real bargains are still to be found, but I don't have the stamina to be heading for garage sales. Besides I own just about everything I want to own. Not a bad problem to have... And I'm certainly not rich...

Just a note.... Although I've found some bargains here and there over the years, I find the FM B & S area to be a median in as much as costs go. There are deals on here, but you have to hedge your time in buying... And although I may only have 2 buys, I would consider them to be substantial in nature with the best possible outcomes. I DO NOT hesitate whatsoever with people on this forum. I read their previous posts, threads, and buys.. You can pretty well feel people out.

I did grab a 'bulk' film back for my F2a body once at a sale. It was in the wrong box and I ended up with a 2'fer. The original item I was buying, and the bulk back.. I used it till the latches wouldn't work to stay closed.. Loved that back !

A few weeks I picked up a real nice Tokina 11-16 w/Hoya filter and a variable ND off of Craigslist for $360
It was listed for $380 OBO

I offered him $350 and he got a little upset.
