I really don't think anyone can answer to this question, you may have to seat on it and let us know.

most of the 'well-known' ergo chairs are $700-1200. Personally, I use/like Steelcase 'Leap' units. I hear the IKEA Markus is nice in the lower price range.

I have one of those IKEA Markus chairs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20178865/

Very comfortable and with a high back/headrest that fits me. At $169.00 it's with it. Easy to put together, too.

Regards.....Pete

Quite possibly out of your price range, but you can find a Herman Miller Aeron second hand for around $300.

Yeah, it's personal. But look for these features:

Live back (adjustable resistance for leaning back to help support your back)
Adjustable seat depth and angle
Arm rests that not only go up and down, but that swivel to support your arms/wrists when typing

Aeron - meh
Steelcase Leap - excellent. Had one at a job 6+ years ago, and bought one for my home office, too.
Herman Miller Mirra - excellent.

Standing up part of the day is not a bad idea. You can do a DIY build on a standing/sitting desk using parts from IKEA. There are also standing desk units available that just sit on top of your regular desk.

Look for used office furniture places in your area for deals on higher end chairs.

I love my Humanscale Freedom chair. I also have a Steelcase Leap chair that's great. The Leap can be found used for a really reasonable price. Both of these are meant for serious sitting.

Was going to suggest this.

To the OP: The really good chairs tend to start around $700, whether you can afford them or not.

+1 for the Herman Miller Aeron.

It's very comfortable, has many important adjustments, and it's gas-permeable.

Hi Pete,

Mine would, if it was on the market. JIC you're wondering, it's not.

Go to Staple and look at the Tempur-Pedic TP9000. Gets great reviews. I sat in one a couple of weeks ago and almost bought it, but I'm waffling because I'm afraid I would regret not just waiting until I could afford an Aeron or maybe a Leap, which are at the top of my list.

The TP9000 is not equal to either of these chairs, but it's really really good for ~$250.

Maybe I'm an abnormal, but the Aeleron is very uncomfortable. I tried a couple of sizes at work and found a more normal chair that was better, though not well constructed.
