I just picked up a 1Ds on Kijiji. What was I thinking?

I'll tell you what I was thinking...

"1Ds... Mmmm... I've always wanted to try one... "

"It's why I went to Canon when I migrated from you know what, whatever that is... "

I paid $260 CA (about $5 US). It has 85k actuations and it's in [E+] condition, except for a small gash that's about 12mm x 3mm, that's worn through the paint and grippy cover stuff, on the front face of the lower grip, at battery-opening end. It will affect resale value, but not too much.

Here's some things that I've noticed, since getting it about six hours ago.

It says "DIGITAL" at the bottom of the front face, where my previously-oldest 1D-series camera says "Mk IV". Cute.

The RAW file extension is ".TIF". Charming.

ISO 100 to 1250, expands to, 50 to 1250. OMG.

It has an extra "safety" button on the battery release. I actually forgot that my 1DII cameras had that, too.

It feels good in the hand - just like I new it would.

I had to search the manual for "beep" to get to the point that I remember that it's on the stupid On/Off switch. What were they thinking? What was I thinking?

Firewire - damn! There are four or five Personal Functions that I want to change.

Anybody know of a Firewire to USB 2 or 3 adapter that would actually work? I remember jumping through hoops to get a working driver for my 'previous-generation' desktop, which actually had a pair of Firewire ports.

When I saw the NC-E2 charger, a shiver ran down my spine. OTOH, it works on both 'channels', which is twice as good as the two 'single channel' NC-E2 chargers I had with my two 1DII bodies.

BTW, is there an old 1Ds images thread lurking around, somewhere in the 'Time Machine"?

Just askin'.

Here's a few snaps of my newest EF lens on my oldest EOS DSLR.

Enjoy it! FW - USB ? No such thing exists. They are all scam gadgets. Find someone who still shoots HDV with an HV20 or older... It is probably too much but you could try an old laptop with ExpressCard slot and buy a FW card for it. I have one sitting behind me - coming to Thailand for Songkhran?

A great new toy to play with all for under $300 - how could you go wrong?

Don't let your 1DX get dusty now...

Too funny. Had one a long time ago & just helped someone on the Canon forum who wanted info on changing the authors name on a 1D2. I have the technology & it still works. Too bad we don't live a little closer to each other. Don't forget, it eats batteries & is noisy above ISO 400.

Hi Paul,

Thanks. I did a quick 'survey' and that's what I figured.

I know of one old laptop that fills the bill. It's sitting behind you.

Not a toy. I have plans for this big puppy... [schemy hands emoticon]

In many ways, most of which we can't yet imagine.

Hi Larry,

I'm noisy after ISO 800, am.

I'll be passing through the NCR in about a month... We'll talk.

My parents were from Winterpeg. Cold place in winter but nice in the summer. If needed I'd be more then happy to meet & get it done, I'm sort of semi retired now & work if I feel like it. I've even switched to a cell phone for my business line so people can call me thinking I'm at work when in fact I'm goofing off.

someone say 1Ds I used this for several years - up until 2012

All of these were taken with the 1Ds and Tokina 17mm 3.5 SL RMC. I have since upgraded to a D600 & 14-24

This is my main camera. I have had the luxury of not having used a newer 1D series camera, so I don't miss what I don't know [holding hands over ears so I don't hear of the "new" technology that has been invented in the last decade].

Nice find. It's what I call a retrograde upgrade. Will your 1D X still find some love?

I don't miss the 1Ds at all, to be honest. There is actually no camera I miss - other than my F5.
It is a great camera, no doubt about that. I bought mine in 2009 or 2010. It was the cheapest full frame body at the time. I think I got mine for $1050 or so. 5D was about the same, and 5D2/D700 were $2K (ish). The dust on this beast was a nightmare to deal with. DR was not great (it is 12 years old though ) and good luck getting night stuff.

At the end of the day, it is a tool, and a fine one at that.

I can clearly remember lusting after one of these and thinking 11 meg seemed an enormous file size.

I haven't used one but people say they produce some of the best low ISO files of them all.

Have fun with it.
